Mourns the passing of Coach Cozel Foster

Eagle Pass’s Greatest Ambassador of Goodwill

Eagle Pass Sports Central is saddened to announce the passing of one of the all-time truly great Texas High School football coaching legends the longtime former Eagle Pass Eagles head football coach Cozel Foster. Cozel Foster passed away on Wednesday October 16, 2019 was born on May 17, 1924 in Hawkins, Texas.  He attended and graduated from Phillips High School where he helped lead Phillips to three consecutive undefeated football seasons and was a four year letterman in football garnering all-district honors as a stellar running back during both his junior and senior years in high school.  In his senior year, he was selected to play in the Oil Bowl game in Wichita Falls, Texas where the best players from Texas square off against the best players from Oklahoma.  Foster also played basketball during his high school career.

The high flying Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the leadership of head football coach Tom Gonzalez hosted the always tough Laredo Nixon Mustangs in a key 7:00 PM District 29-6A gridiron matchup on Friday, October 11, 2019 at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. Throughout their storied history every time the Eagles and Mustangs battle each other on the gridiron it has proven to be quite a hard fought game from the opening kickoff til the final buzzer. The visiting Laredo Nixon Mustangs entered this contest with an overall season record of 4-2 and a district mark of 0-2 while the home standing Eagle Pass Eagles will enter with an overall season record of 4-2 and a district mark of 1-1. The Eagles explosive diversified offense and stingy “Land Sharks” defense combined their efforts to coast to a 49 to 21 victory over the Laredo Nixon Mustangs.

October 11, 2019 in a vital 7:30 PM District 14-5A Division I gridiron encounter at the venerable Harlandale Veterans Memorial Stadium located on 4002 Roosevelt Ave. The visiting Mavericks entered this contest sporting an overall season record of 3-3 and a district mark of 1-1 while the home standing Indians came in with a season mark of 2-3 and a district record of 0-1. Numerous costly penalties and mental mistakes proved to be too much to overcome for the Mavericks as they fell by the final score of 31 to 19.

Winn Mavericks varsity football team under the guidance of head football coach Eric Villasenor resumed their district gridiron battles on Friday, October 4, 2019 when they hosted the San Antonio McCollum Cowboys in a 7:30 PM District 14-5A Division I matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. The home standing Mavericks entered this contest sporting an overall season record of 2-3 and a district mark of 0-1 while the visiting McCollum Cowboys came in with an overall season record of 0-5 and a district mark of 0-1. The home standing Mavericks showcased their powerful and potent power ground assault while the famed Mavericks aggressive defense allowed only a total of 41 yards rushing and picked off two Cowboys attempts to come away with the well earned 23 to 7 victory over the Cowboys.

The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the guidance of head football coach Tom Gonzalez hit the road on Thursday, October 3, 2019 for a trip to Laredo, Texas to battle against the Laredo LBJ Wolves in a 7:00 PM district gridiron contest at the Laredo United ISD Student Activity Center. The visiting Eagle Pass Eagles entered this game sporting and overall season record of 3 wins with two losses and a district mark of 0-1 while the home standing Laredo LBJ Wolves came in with an overall season mark of 2 wins with 3 losses and a district record of 0-1. The Eagle Pass Eagles unleashed a relentless short passing game and complimented it with a solid ground attack while the Eagles “Land Sharks” defense forced two key turnovers with their aggressive style of play holding the LBJ offensive squad to just 31 yards rushing in the second half and only 5 total yards passing in the whole game to give the Eagles a 36 to 10 victory over the Wolves.
