The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity boys basketball team under the leadership of head coach Paulo Valero and assistant coaches Julio Cumpian, Patrick Sanchez and Eric Ramos ventured to San Antonio, Texas on Friday, January 18, 2019to tipoff against the defending Region IV champion and UIL State Semifinalists the tough Somerset Bulldogs in a 6:30 PM hoops encounter. This game proved to quite a nail biter as both teams battled with every ounce of energy in the bodies on both ends of the court with the game finally decided on a final second buzzer beating winning layup by Mavericks Jairo Maldonado to give the Mavericks their first district victory of the season by the final score of 66 to 64.

Following report courtesy of Coach Paulo Valero:

The C.C. Winn Mavericks ventured into Somerset, Texas to face off against last year’s final four participant the Somerset Bulldogs led by Coach Penna. The District 28-5A rematch was set to be a close one as the predictions had Somerset in a close 1 point victory. But the game isn’t played on paper and the close prediction was right on point as the Bulldogs and Mavericks battled it out on the court for an entire 32 minutes before a winner would be determined..

The Bulldogs started off on a tear inside with #32 Ramos on the inside knocking down 17 points all from inside the paint, including the first 7 of the game. The Mavericks battled back though led by Jairo Maldonado and Diego Rodriguez who combined for 11 of the 15 first quarter points for the Mavericks. The second quarter saw the Mavericks implement a speed lineup of Eric Sanchez Ram Corpus and Alex Rodriguez who put a lot of pressure on the Bulldogs guards to make quick decisions. The score at the half was Somerset 29 Winn 28.

In the third quarter the Mavericks mixed and matched lineups in order to counter Somerset and kept the ball away from Ramos who managed just two baskets in the second half. Alex Rodriguez and Moe Gaytan caught fire in the 3rd quarter dropping a combined 16 points in the frame.  The Mavericks were able to take a 4 point lead into the fourth setting up the classic finish.

In a back and forth final frame Jairo Maldonado and Eric Sanchez kept finding Diego Rodriguez underneath and he was able to score 6 in the frame. Moe Gaytan quick thinking after a Somerset basket got Alex Rodriguez open for a layup and gave the Mavericks a 2 point lead with under 3 minutes to go. The Bulldogs were able to fight back though and took a 3 point lead with under 30 seconds to go and the ball.  The Mavericks were able to force a turnover and took a timeout setting up a play for Eduardo Nava who was able to knock down all 3 free throws to tie the game. With time winding down Somerset was trying to hold the ball for the final shot but the defense forced them into a long floater which German Velasquez was able to secure and call timeout with 4.4 seconds left. The Winn coaching staff set up a full court play for Jairo Maldonado and he was able to sprint full court with the ball, managing to get by 3 defenders while putting up a circus layup at the buzzer and watching the ball go through the net and giving the Mavericks the two point victory.

The Mavericks next take on the Floresville Tigers in a key District 28-5A battle at C.C. Winn High School gym at 6:30 pm.
