After months and months of preparation and anticipation the history making 2018 Babe Ruth League 14 year old division World Series hosted by the City of Eagle Pass, Texas in conjunction with the Eagle Pass Babe Ruth League finally got underway on Thursday, August 9, 2918 with festivities starting early Thursday morning with a parade of stars starting at IBC Bank where all 10 teams competing in this truly elite tournament being driven through the heart of downtown Eagle Pass, Texas and culminating at Moncada’s Baseball Park with the tournament opening ceremonies taking center stage where several dignitaries from the Babe Ruth League organization in attendance for this historic occasion.

A total of four games were on tap for the opening day with the tournament action commencing at noon with a matchup between the New England Regional champion-Norwalk, Connecticut taking on the Middle Atlantic Regional champion Somers Point, New Jersey at 12;00 noon followed by a 2:30 PM encounter between the Ohio Valley Regional champ Hammond, Indiana squaring off against the Southwest Regional champion-Phenix City, Alabama. The third game on the agenda for opening day pitted the East Texas State champion-Nederland, Texas tangling with the Southeast Regional champion-Tallahassee, Fllorida at 5:30 PM and rounding out first day action were the Midwest Plains Regional champion-West Fargo, North Dakota taking the field against the host squad the mighty Eagle Pass Babe Ruth League 14 year old all-stars at 8:00 PM

POOL PLAY GAME 1

The Babe Ruth League 14 year old World Series division host team, the Eagle Pass Babe Ruth League 14 year old all-stars began their respective quest for the World Series title with a matchup against the West Fargo, North Dakota in a game originally scheduled to start at 8:00 PM but due to some unforeseen delay in the game prior to this matchup the game thus started really late and would wind up finishing way past midnight.

The designated home team in the game West Fargo, North Dakota took full advantage of two costly errors by the Eagle Pass squad coupled with control problems by the Eagle Pass starting pitcher to tally all of their five runs of this game in the bottom of the second inning on only two base hits.

The proud Eagle Pass 14 year old all-stars countered with a three run production in the top half of the fourth inning with Matthew Elizondo leading of the frame drawing walk, relief pitcher Jared Romero who replaced starting pitcher Jose Ramos after just one inning of work on the mound helped his own cause belting a solid RBI single to tally Matthew Elizondo home all the way from first. Zackary Zapata followed with a single to put runners on first and second, Eduardo Sepulveda followed attempting a sacrifice bunt but the West Fargo hurler threw the ball sway enabling Jarod Romero to score on the play Izek Garza followed with an RBI ground to bring home Zackary Zapata to narrow the Eagle Pass deficit to a pair of runs but neither team managed to score anymore runs enabling West Fargo, North Dakota to escape with a 5 to 3 victory. Relief pitcher Jarod Romero was selected the Player of the Game with four solid innings of work. Eagle Pass starting pitcher Jose Pablo Ramos was credited with the pitching loss. Zackary Zapata led the Eagle Pass 14 year old all-stars at the plate going 2 for 3 with 1 run scored in this game.

POOL PLAY GAME 2

After dropping their opening round game of this World Series Tournament due to walks, errors and base running miscues, the Eagle Pass Babe Ruth 14 year old all-stars regrouped on Friday, August 10, 2018 to take on the Southwest Regional champion-Phenix City, Alabama in an 8:00 PM matchup. The local squad managed to take the early lead in this game with a lone run in the home half of the third inning courtesy of a pair of errors by Phenix City, Alabama with Izekl Garza tallying the run for the Eagle Pass Babe Ruth 14 year old all-stars.

Phenix City, Alabama countered with a game tying lone run in the top half of the fourth inning, The proud Eagle Pass Babe Ruth League 14year old all-stars supported by good sized loyal fans in attendance stormed back in the bottom of the fifth inning to break up the one all tie with a big four run production with Aaron Trevizo drawing a lead of base on balls and was replaced by pinch runner Guillermo Velasquez who promptly stole second, Ramon K. Salinas, Jr. attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt but bunted the pitch in the air towards the third base side that fell in safely between the pitcher and catcher for an infield hit that enabled Guillermo Velasquez to score on the play, Izek Garza followed by blasting an opposite field RBI triple to bring home Ramon K. Salinas, Manuel Melchor laid down a squeeze bunt to tally Izek Garza with Melchor scampering over to second on a throwing error on the play, with two outs Zackary Zapata came through with a clutch RBI single to deliver Manuel Melchor home giving the Eagle Pass crew a 5 to 1 lead.

Eagle Pass starting and eventual game winning hurler Eduardo Sepulveda who toiled five solid complete innings of work on the mound was replaced by relief hurler Alan Jimenez who earned the save but not before Phenix City, Alabama made things interesting by tallying a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and had a runner in scoring position with two outs when Alan Jimenez issued a walk to the next batter which would have put the potential game tying runs on base but the runner at second was gunned down at third attempting to steal the base by Eagle Pass catcher Zackary Zapata who fired a perfect throw to third baseman Jose Ramos who applied the tag to end the game with the Eagle Pass 14 year old all-stars earning the hard fought 5 to 3 victory over Phenix City, Alabama to even their tournament record to1 win with 1 loss. Izek Garza was selected the Player of the Game for the Eagle Pass, 14 year old all-stars.

POOL PLAY GAME 3

In their third game of pool play, the Eagle Pass Babe Ruth 14year old all-stars tangled with the Ohio Valley Regional champions-Hammond, Indiana in an 8:00 PM baseball diamond encounter on Saturday, August 11, 2018. This game proved to be not one for the faint of heart as both teams battled each other with tooth and nail with both teams combining for a total of 20 runs scored, 22 base hits, 11 walks issued, 2 hit batsmen and a whopping total of 14 errors committed before the dust had settled at home plate but sales on antacid and acid reflux medications greatly increased at all of the local pharmacies.

The Eagle Pass 14 year old all-star squad took the lead with a lone run in the top of the first with Jose Pablo Ramos rattling the fence with a one out triple and then came home courtesy of a balk called on the Hammond, Indiana starting pitcher. Hammond, Indiana countered with a game tying run in the home half of the first.

Eagle Pass broke up the one all tie with another lone run in the top of the second with Omar Salazar II leading off the frame with a single and promptly stole second, Ramon K. Salinas successfully sacrificed Omar Salazar over to their with a well placed sacrifice bunt, Eduardo Sepulveda reached on an error enabling Omar Salazar to score on the play but once again Hammond, Indiana answered right back with a lone game tying run in the bottom of the second.

In the top of the third Eagle Pass regained the lead with yet another lone run with Jose Pablo Ramos leading off the frame with a single and immediately stole second to get into scoring position, Jarod Romero followed with an RBI single to bring home Jose Pablo Ramos. The pesky Hammond, Indiana crew refused to fold and once again knotted up the scoreboard with alone run in the bottom of the third.

The highly touted Eagle Pass 14 year old Babe Ruth all-stars managed to take the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth with Eduardo Sepulveda drawing a base on balls, Alana Jimenez stroked a single to put runners at the corners, Eagle Pass manager then successfully called for a double steal with Jimenez swiping second and Eduardo Sepulveda stealing home, Alan Jimenez then advanced to third on a groundout and came home to score courtesy of a passed ball to give the Eagle Pass crew a 4 to 3 lead in this game. However the lead did not last long as Hammond, Indiana took the lead away with a three run production in the home half of the fourth courtesy of three base hits and three costly Eagle Pass errors to take a 6 to 5 lead in this game.

Hammond, Indiana managed to increase their lead with a lone run in the bottom of the fifth but the proud Eagle Pass Babe Ruth 14 year old all-stars supported by their Loyal Legion of fans in attendance stormed back with a huge six run uprising in the top half of the sixth inning on four solid base hits and one Hammond, Indiana error to take the lead for good in this crucial game.

In the bottom of the seventh and final inning, Hammond, Indiana made things interesting by tallying a pair of runs to narrow their deficit to only two runs and had the potential game tying runs on base with two outs but Eagle Pass relief and eventual game winning hurler Izek Garza picked off the runner at first to end the game much to the delight of the Eagle Pass faithful fans as the Eagle Pass Babe Ruth 14 year old all-stars took the hard fought victory by the final score of 11 to 9 to improve their tournament record to 2-1. POOL PLAY GAME 4

Having had their regularly scheduled fourth and final pool play game on Monday night postponed due to a much welcomed relief from Mother Nature with a much needed downpour, the Eagle Pass Babe Ruth League14year old all-stars returned to the diamond on Tuesday morning to battle the undefeated Honolulu, Hawaii squad in an 11:30am matchup.

Honolulu, Hawaii who was the visiting team for this key game which would determine the seeding for bracket play broke into the scoring column first with a pair of runs in the top half of the first inning greatly benefitting from a pair of missed played fly balls out in the outfield. In the top of the second the fundamentally sound Honolulu, Hawaii squad erupted with a huge 8 run production banging out six base hits, coupled with a pair of base on balls and two Eagle Pass errors to break this game wide open.

Hawaii tacked on a lone run in the top of the third to extend their lead to 11 to 0 over Eagle Pass. But in the home half of the third, the Eagle Pass crew finally broke through with a five run outburst with Eduardo Sepulveda lead off the frame with a base on balls, Aaron Trevizo followed with a single, Juan Jesus Garza also connected with a single to load the bases, Matthew Elizondo slapped an RBI single to drive in Eduardo Sepulveda, Omar Salazar II belted a two RBI double to bring home Aaron Trevizo and Juan Jesus Garza, Jarod Romero drew a walk, with one out Izek Garza reached on a fielder’s choice enabling Omar Salazar II to score on the play, Alan Jimenez followed with an RBI single to tally Jarod Romero with the fifth and final run of the frame.

In the top half of the fourth the Honolulu, Hawaii 14 year old all-stars countered with four more runs and then tacked on another lone run in the top of the fifth to come away with the decisive 16 to 5 victory via the 10-run rule over the Eagle Pass. Alan Jimenez was selected the Player of the Game for Eagle Pass.

BRACKET PLAY GAME 1

Culminating pool play on Tuesday morning the Eagle Pass Babe Ruth 14 year old all-stars finished in second place in the American Division with a 2-2 record thus advancing into Bracket play where they squared off against Atlantic Shore Somers Point, New Jersey who finished third in the National Division in an elimination game at 8:00 PM encounter on Tuesday night.

The Atlantic Shore Somers Point, New Jersey crew dented the scoreboard first with a lone run in the top half of the second inning courtesy of a walk and back to back singles to take the early 1 to 0 lead. The proud Eagle Pass Babe Ruth 14year old all-stars countered with a game tying lone run in the bottom of the second on a successful bunt by Ramon K. Salinas to bring home Izek Garza from third but unfortunately that would prove to be the only run that Eagle Pass 14 year old crew would produce on this night.

Atlantic Shore would break up the lead with another lone run in the top of the third on a base on balls and back to back singles to take a 2 to 1 lead over Eagle Pass. In the top of the sixth, Atlantic Shore padded their lead with a pair of runs courtesy of two very costly Eagle Pass errors and then managed to tack on an insurance run in the top of the seventh to eventually come away with the hard earned 5 to 1 victory and thus eliminating the mighty Eagle Pass Babe Ruth League 14 year old all-stars who culminate this tournament with a very respectable fifth place finish

Eagle Pass Sports Central would like to congratulate the entire Eagle Pass Babe Ruth League 14 year old all-stars Izek Garza, Ramon “Kali” Salinas, Manuel “Manny” Melchor III, Juan Jesus Garza, Zackary “Zack” Zapata, Matthew Elizondo, Josue Jimenez, Omar Salazar II, Hector “PJ” Gomez, Jr., Alan Rolando Jimenez, Guillermo “Fabian” Velasquez, Eduardo Sepulveda, Jose Pablo Ramos, Aaron “Guero” Trevizo and Jarod Romero as well as their respective coaching staff manager Ramon Salinas, Jr., and assistant coaches Ramon S. Salinas, Julian Elizondo, and Eduardo Sepulveda for their magnificent showing at the 2018 Babe Ruth League 14 year old division World Series as well as for representing the entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas as well as the Eagle Pass Babe Ruth League with pride, dignity and class and for being such gracious hosts for this local athletic history making event. We wish each of you continued success in all of your future endeavors. You all have earned a much deserved berth in long storied City of Eagle Pass, Texas athletic history book.

A grand tip of the cap certainly goes out to Eagle Pass Babe Ruth League president Morris Libson, Jr., his wife Dora Libson as well as the hundreds of volunteers and the City of Eagle Pass, Texas for being such gracious hosts to this once in a lifetime historical event.
