The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity girls basketball team under the guidance of head coach Paulo Valero and assistant coaches Federico Paniagua, Julio Cumpian and Tonya Rosas ventured ti the Rio Grande Valley on Thursday, November 30, 2017 to compete in the high caliber Donna Dreamcatcher Invitational Basketball Tournament.  The Lady Mavericks made a very respectable showing during the tournament winning two of their five games but barely lost in two of their three losses.  The experience that the entire roster got at this tournament will prove quite valuable when district hoops play comes around.  Lady Mavericks Gyselle Rangel and Ashley Cruz were selected to the All-Tournament team.

GAME 1

Box Score       1          2         3         4       Final

John Paul     15          6       15         9       45

C.C. Winn       7          5       19       11       42

Player of the Game: Gyselle Rangel 18 points

Key Contributions from Ana Lopez 5 points& Silvy Salazar 9 points

John Paul came out firing on all cylinders.  After the first quarter adjustments we were able to outscore them 35-30 for the rest of the game.  Our first quarterdeficit was too much to overcome.  We did have a chance to tie it with two seconds left.  Unfortunately both 3’s came up short.

GAME 2

Box Score       1          2         3         4       Final

C.C. Winn     13        10       10       11       44

Sharyland     12         8       13         5       38

Player of the Game: Ashley Cruz 14 points

Key Contributions from Gyselle Rangel 16 points & Destiny Sukue 6 points

In a game that was tight th entire game, Winn was able to keep an early lead and kept Sharyland behind the entire game.  Ashley Cruz & Gyselle Rangel managed to score 13 in the first quarter to take an early lead before Sharyland started their run.  Rangel finished with 16 points while key defensive stops and scores by Ashley Cruz netted her 14 points,  A key 3-poinetr by Kim Rodriguez at the buzzer to end the first half was key to take momentum into the half.  Sharyland came out red hot from the three-point line in the 2nd half nailing four 3’s but nothing else in the third quarter.  A hot 4th quarter by Ashley Cruz (6 points) and defensive stops by Arleth Herrera and Andrea Aldape were enough to keep Sharyland with just 5 points in the 4th.  Sharyland had no 2 point field goals in the entire 2nd half and a total of 5 for the game.

GAME 3

Box Score       1          2         3         4       Final

Donna                        7         8         8       19       33

C.C. Winn       3          6       12         6       27

Player of the Game: Gyselle Rangel 11 points

Key contributions from Silvy Salazar 5 points

In a defensive slugfest, Donna was able to take a 15 to 9 lead into the half.  Both teams made halftime adjustments and heading into the 4th it was a 2 point game.  With 90 seconds left we went down by 1, we got a steal and took it in for a layup, only to be missed. The rest of the game we had to play the fouling gam, which resulted in Donna making clutch free throws.  Donna outshot us 25-11 from the free throw line.

GAME 4

Box Score       1          2         3         4       Final

C.C. Winn     16        16       11         6       49

Mission            3          7         8         9       27

Player of the Game: Destiny Sukue 13 points

Key contributions from Silvy Salazar 10 points, Ana Lopez and Bri Ibarra 6 points

Came out firing with 16 points in the first quarter while holding Mission to 3 points.  2nd matched out 1st and we took a 32-10 halftime lead. Our on ball pressure led by Arleth Herrera, Ashley Cruz and Carla Guillen had ther coach saying :MAN THEYARE EVERYWHERE ON DEFENSE.”  Managed to score six three pointers for the game with key ones coming from Bri Ibarra and Ana Lopez.  Eight different Lady Mavericks managed to score in the game including 13 by Destiny Sukue and 10 by Silvy Salazar.

GAME 5

Box Score       1          2         3         4       Final

C.C. Winn       3        11       10         6       30

SJA                10          7       13         9       39

Player of the Game: Silvy Salazar 11 points

Key contributions from Ashley Cruz 8 points & Andrea Aldape 4 points

With a couple of key injuries, Brownsville St. Joseph Academy was able to come out fast with 10 points in the first quarter while holding us to 3.  After some key adjustments, we were able to outscore them 11-7 in the 2nd quarter by relying heavily on our defense.  Being down by 6 forced us to adjust on defense and they were able to pull away outscoring us 9- in the 4th quarter.
