The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity baseball team mentored by head coach Reynol Mendoza and assistant coaches Henry Silva and Chris Villa opened their quest for the district title on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 by hosting their longtime district rival the Laredo United Longhorns in a key 7:00 PM matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Polo Moncada Baseball Field.

The visiting Laredo United Longhorns took the lead in this contest with a lone unearned run in the top half of the first but that proved to be the only damage the Longhorns would muster on this night as the Eagles pitching duo of starter Sergio Lopez and relief man Edward Mendoza were simply dominant on the mound combining the pitching effort to allow just that one unearned run scattering three harmless hits while striking out 7 batters in this game.

The proud Eagles quickly countered with a game tying lone run in the bottom of the first with Edward Mendoza reaching on a fielder’s choice and promptly stealing second and Mendoza taking third on an error, Jarrod Romero reached safely after a dropped third strike and then executed a double steal to perfection with Romero wiping second and Edward Mendoza stealing home to tie the game at one run apiece.

Eagles starting pitcher Sergio Lopez hurled four complete innings of play before turning over the pitching chores to relief man Edward Mendoza who kept the game at one all with three complete quality innings of work on the mound. In the bottom of the sixth supported by their ever present Loyal Legion of Eagles followers, the Eagles broke up the tie with a lone run with CJ Jimenez belting a single, Mike Perry was hit by a pitch and Isaac Stanwick laid down a picture perfect bunt for an infield hit to load the bases, the United pitcher then uncorked a wild pitch enabling CJ Jimenez to come home on the play to give the Eagles a 2 to 1 lead. Edward Mendoza then sealed the victory with three strikeouts in the top of the seventh to earn the pitching victory with the Eagles defeating Laredo United by the score of 2 to 1. Way to Go Eagles!
