Record 550th all-time victory

The defending District 29-6A champion Eagle Pass Lady Eagles varsity girls’ softball team opened their respective 2020 Texas High School softball season on Friday February 21, 2020 by journeying to Smithson Valley to compete in the high caliber Smithson Valley Lady Rangers Invitational Softball Tournament. The Lady Eagles won two out of their five games in this tournament but in the process reached a major milestone in their storied history when they defeated the San Antonio Madison Lady Mavericks 10to 3 on Saturday, February 22, 2020 to record their all-time 550th victory in school history.

GAME 1

The Lady Eagles started their season and tournament action on the right foot as they erupted with a four run production in the top half of the very first inning with Lashay Reyes stroking a one out single, Kaylynne Ruiz drew a walk and Cristabel Martinez was it by a pitch to load the bases, Bianca Vielma drew a walk to drive in Lashay Reyes with the first run of the game and the season, Iliana Luna lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Kaylynne Ruiz, Natalie Flores belted a two RBI single to drive in Cristabel Martinez and Bianca Vielma to give the Lady Eagles the early 4 to 0 lead.

Los Fresnos countered with a lone run in the bottom of the first but the proud Lady Eagles answered with a huge five runout pt in the top of the second inning with Karyna Perez, Romy Flores, Paola Daniel, Lashay Reyez and Cristabel Martinez each scoring a run in that frame and the big blow being delivered by Iliana Luna who connected with a two RBI single to give the Lady Eagles a seemingly commanding 9 to1 lead in this game.

The Lady Eagles carried that lead until the bottom half of the fifth inning when low and behold disaster struck as the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons pounded out five base hits and took full advantage of four costly Lady Eagles a produce 9 big runs to snatch the victory from the hands of defeat with the winning runs coming on a two run homerun to take a 10 to 9 victory over the heart broken Lady Eagles

GAME 2

In game 2 the Lady Eagles reloaded their arsenal to take on the San Antonio Southside Lady Cardinals The Lady Eagles dented the scoreboard first with a lone run in the top o the first with Paola Daniel leading off the game with a double, Lashay Reyes grounded out to the pitcher enabling Paola Daniel to advance to third on the play, with one out Kaylynne Ruiz lifted a sacrifice fly to leftfield allowing Paola Daniel to race home with the first run of the game.

Southside countered with a lone run in the bottom o the firs to knot up the game but that proved to be the only damage they would muster in this game. But the Lady Eagles quickly regained the lead for good with a pair of runs in the top half of the third inning with Paola Daniel reaching on a one out error and promptly stole second, with two outs Kaylynne Ruiz stroked and RBI double to drive in Paola Daniel, Cristabel Martinez reached on an error enabling Kaylynne Ruiz to score on the play to give the Lady Eagles a 3 to 1 lead.

The Lady Eagles then sealed their first victory of the year with a six run production in the top of the fifth with Lashay Reyes leading off the frame by blasting a triple, Kaylynne Ruiz followed with an RBI single to bring home Lashay Ruiz, Cristabel Martinez reached on a fielder’s choice, :Priscilla Guerra connected with a single, Natalie Flores belted and RBI single to bring home Cristabel Martinez, Iliana Luna stroked a two RBI double to drive in Priscilla Guerra and Natalie Flores, Karyna Perez reached on an error, Romy Flores connected with an RBI single to tally Iliana Luna and Paola Daniel lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Karyna Perez with the final run of this game giving the Lady Eagles the convincing 9 to1 victory over the Southside Lady Cardinals.

GAME 3

In their third game of the Smithson Valley Lady Rangers Tournament the Lady Eagles ran into the power pitching of San Antonio O’Connor’s Sammie Portillo who handcuffed the Lady Eagles batters to the tune of no runs only allowed one hit and struck out 8 batters enroute to the 7 to 0 victory over the Lady Eagles with Romy Flores collecting the only hit for the Lady Eagles.

GAME 4

On Saturday the Lady Eagles resumed play by taking on the tournament’s host team the Smithson Valley Lady Rangers who took the early lead with a lone run in the top of the first but the Lady Eagles immediately answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first with Paola Daniel reaching on and err, with one out Kaylynne Ruiz stepped up to the plate and blasted a two run homerun to give the Lady Eagles a 2 to 1 lead bit unfortunately that proved to be the only offensive damage they would muster in this game.

MITHSON Valley regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second and then tacked on an insurance run in the top of the fourth to come away with the hard-fought victory over the Lady Eagles.

GAME 5

` In their finale of this tournament the Lady Eagles took the field to battle the San Antonio Madison Lady Mavericks. Paced by the hitting of Paola Daniel, Ashley Zamago and Lashay Reyes along with the pitching combination of Monserrat Velazco and Valeria Vielma the Lady Eagles notched a major milestone in their storied 27-year history. The 10 to 3 victory over Madison was the program’s all-time 550th victory.
