The C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football team under the leadership of head football coach Eric Villasenor hit the road on Friday, November 1, 2019 with a trip to the Alamo City of San Antonio, Texas to square-off against the Southwest Legacy Titans in a vital 7:30 PM District gridiron encounter. The task at hand for the Mavericks is that they have to win both of their final two games to secure the fourth place playoff berth in the district. The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks ventured into this game sporting an overall season record of 3-5 and a district mark of 1-3 while the home standing Southwest Legacy Titans came in sporting an overall season record of 5-4 and a district mark of 2-3. After taking a seemingly comfortable 24 to 6 lead at the half with 220 yards rushing the Mavericks were unbelievably held scoreless and only 19 total yards in the second half as the Southwest Legacy Titans tallied 29 unanswered points to take a heartbreaking 35 to24 victory over the Mavericks to eliminate them for contention for the fourth and final playoff spot.

The visiting Mavericks came out of their pre-game ritual simply unstoppable as they received the game’s opening kickoff and unleashed their powerful ground game featuring their leading rusher Ethan Johnston and quarterback Jose Padilla to orchestrate a slow and methodical 12 play 76 yard scoring drive with Johnston carrying nearly all of the load but the key play of this drive came when quarterback Jose Padilla faked a pitchout to Johnston with the entire defense keying on Johnston but instead kept the ball and picked up 20 yards to convert a third and 7 situation to sustain the drive. Jose Padilla capped off the scoring drive with a two yard keeper with 5:15 showing on the first quarter clock. Amikar Ramos tacked on the point after to give the Mavericks the early 7 to 0 lead.

After the ensuing kickoff the Southwest Legacy Titans drove down to the C.C. Winn 17 yard line where the stingy Mavericks defense featuring Alejandro Ontiveros, Jared Roiz, Noe Castillon, and Jose Hinojosa and company held their ground and forced the Titans to turn the ball over on downs.

It took the explosive Mavericks ground game just two plays from scrimmage to tally another score as quarterback Jose Padilla called his own number showcased his speed and simply out ran the entire Titans defense with a brilliant 84 yard touchdown run with 1:30 left in the opening quarter. Amikar Ramos converted the point after to give the Mavericks a 14 to 0 lead over the Titans.

On the Titans next offensive series, the Mavericks defensive relentless pressure paid off as defensive back Eric Sanchez intercepted a Titans pass attempt and returned it 30 yards to the Southwest Legacy 36 yard line to set up the next score of the night. The Mavericks offense took just one play from scrimmage to put the next points on the board as Ethan Johnston took a pitch from Jose Padilla and pulled up and connected with a wide open wider receiver Michael Olivo with a well executed 36 yard touchdown halfback pass with 11:51 left in the first half. Amikar Ramos added the point after to give the Mavericks a 21 to 0 lead over the Titans.

The Titans countered with what proved to be their only score of the first half when they mounted a 64 yard scoring drive culminating with a 4 yard run to pay dirt by their workhorse running back Marcus Cantu with 6:42 left in the first half. The point after attempt failed but the Mavericks now held a 21 to 6 lead.

After a failed onsides kick attempt on the ensuing kickoff, the Mavericks took over at the Southwest Legacy 47 yard line and managed to drive down to the Titans 7 yard line where the drive stalled but settled for a 24 yard field goal by place kicker Amikar Ramos to take a seemingly comfortable 24 to 6 lead into the halftime locker room.

The halftime stats showed the Mavericks with a whopping 220 yards rushing on 22 attempts and 36 yards passing on only one pass attempt for a total of 256 yards while the stingy Mavericks defense only allowing 67 yards rushing on 16 attempts and 48 yards passing on two completions for a total of 115 yards. But evidently the Titans must have made some major adjustments during the halftime break as the second half of this contest was a whole different story.

The Titans received the second half kickoff and quickly orchestrated an 8 play 64 yard scoring drive capped off with a two yard keeper by quarterback Zezar Tovar with 7:02 showing on the third quarter clock, Javier Lira tacked on the point after to narrow the Mavericks lead to 24 to 13,

After the ensuing kickoff disaster struck as the Mavericks fumbled the ball at their own 20 yard line which opened the door for the Titans who took three plays to capitalize on the huge turnover with a two yard plunge into the end zone by running back Damien Hernandez with 5:21 left in the third period. The Titans then added a two-point conversion pass to wide receiver Javier Murillo to narrow their deficit to just three points heading to the fourth and final quarter,

The Titans continued their comeback scoring assault with a 57 yard scoring drive that culminated with a 3 yard run to pay dirt by running back Marcus Cantu with 5:55 left in the game and Javier Lira converted the point after to give the Titans a 28 to 24 lead over the Mavericks.

The Titans then closed out the scoring for the night with a short 16 yard scoring drive punctuated with an 8 yard run into the end zone by Marcus Cantu with 2:11 left in the game. Javier Lira split the uprights with the point after to give the Titans the heartbreaking 35 to 24 victory over the Mavericks thus eliminating the Mavericks from the final hope of securing a post season playoff berth.

The story of the second half was that surprisingly the Mavericks were held scoreless and just one first down and only 19 total yards rushing the entire second half of play while the Titans tallied 29 unanswered points for their comeback victory and out gained the Mavericks 157 yards to 19 yards.

The Mavericks will now regroup and head home to close out their season next Friday, November 8, 2019 where they will entertain the San Antonio Southwest Dragons in a 7:30 PM gridiron matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in a game that is also designated as C.C. Winn High School’s 2019 Homecoming Game with the coronation of the King and Queen and the Royal Court taking place during the halftime festivities. Eagle Pass Sports Central invites the famed Maverick Nation as well as the entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas to come out to the stadium this coming Friday and support the mighty Mavericks.
