Laredo Alexander 42 to 30

2019 HOMECOMING GAME

The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the direction of head football coach Tom Gonzalez entertained the perennially tough Laredo Alexander Bulldogs on Friday, October 25, 2019 in a key and vital 7:00 PM District 29-6A gridiron encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium with major playoff implications riding on the line as the Alexander Bulldogs, Eagle Pass Eagles and Del Rio Rams continue to battle for the third and fourth place playoff seeds. This game was designated as Eagle Pass High School’s 2019 Homecoming Game with the coronation of the King and Queen and the Royal Court scheduled to take place during the halftime festivities.

The visiting Laredo Alexander Bulldogs received the game’s opening kickoff and it did not take long for them to dent the scoreboard with a three play 75 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 15 yard run to pay dirt by slot back/quarter back Junior Rodriguez with 11:12 showing o the first quarter clock. Mauricio Lopez tacked on the point after to give the Bulldogs the early 7 to 0 lead.

After the ensuing kickoff the Eagles took their turn on offense but were forced to punt, The Alexander Bulldogs went back to work orchestrating a 7 play 68 yard scoring drive culminating with a one yard run by Junior Rodriguez with 5:30 remaining in the first quarter. Place kicker Mauricio Lopez converted the point after to extend the Bulldogs lead to 14 to 0 over the Eagles.

The Eagles offense finally got untracked to respond with a 67 yard scoring drive that was capped off with 16yardtouchdown pass from quarterback Allan Rodriguez to backup signal caller Domingo Fuentes who was pressed into action as a wide receiver due to injuries with 2:12 left the opening quarter. Erick Ramirez split the up rights with the point after.

The Eagles famed “Land Sharks” defense came up with a big play as Eddie Sepulveda caused a fumble which was recovered by Uriel Martinez to set up the Eagles offense with excellent field possession at the Laredo Alexander 42 yard line. The Eagles offense capitalized on the turnover capping off the short scoring drive with a 10 yard scamper into the end zone by running back Isaac Caballero with 11:14 showing on the second quarter clock. Erick Ramirez added the point after to knot up the score at 14 all.

But late in the first half after an exchange of interceptions by both teams the Alexander Bulldogs broke the 14 all tie when they engineered a 90yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 26 yard halfback back pass from Junior Rodriguez to wide receiver Iker Jaimes with 3:37 left in the first half> Mauricio Lopez tacked on the point after to give the Bulldogs a narrow 21 to 14 lead over the Eagles heading into the halftime break.

In the second half the Eagles received the second half kickoff and immediately implemented the minor adjustment they made during the halftime break that paid off with a 4 play 49 yard scoring drive capped off with a six yard blast to pay dirt by running back Saul Peralez with 11;04 showing on the third quarter clock. Sure footed placekicker Erick Ramirez tied the score at 21 all with his point after.

The Alexander Bulldogs countered once again with a 65 yard scoring drive culminating 1 a one yard plunge into the end zone by work horse running back Camilo Pedraza with 6:53 left in the third quarter. Mauricio Lopez remained perfect in the point after department to give the Bulldogs a 28 to 21 lead over the Eagles. Late in the third quarter the Bulldogs extended their lead with a 67 yard scoring drive culminating with a 67 yard touchdown pass from Jay Santos to wide receiver Iker Jaimes with 2:27 remaining in the third quarter. Mauricio Lopez added the point after to give the Bulldogs a 35 to 21 lad over the Eagles.

Early in the fourth and final quarter, Eagles’ placekicker Erick Ramirez booted a 36 yard field goal over the crossbar to make the score 35 to 24 in favor of the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs stormed right back with a 51 yard scoring drive with Bulldogs quarterback Jay Santos tallying on a 5 yard keeper. Mauricio Lopez added the point after to give the Bulldogs a 42 to 24 lead over the Eagles.

The proud Eagles closed out the scoring for this game when they manufactured a 71 yard scoring drive capped off with a 12 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Alan Rodriguez to wide receiver Carlos Santos with 3:27 left in the game. The Eagles two-point conversion attempt was no good which enabled the Laredo Alexander Bulldogs to go home with the hard fought 42 to 30 victory over the valiant Eagle Pass Eagles.

The Eagles have an Open date on their schedule this coming Friday but return for their district and regular season finale the following Friday, November 8, 2019 when they venture to Del Rio, Texas to battle against the oldest gridiron foe the Del Rio Rams in a vital 7:00 PM encounter where the Eagles will need a victory over the Rams to clinch the fourth place playoff spot.. Eagle Pass Sports Central wishes the mighty Eagle Pass Eagles the very best of luck against the Del Rio Rams and invite the Loyal Legion of Eagles faithful as well as the community of Eagle Pass, Texas to make the trip to Del Rio in two weeks and support the Eagles.
