The mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team with their powerful running game under the leadership of head football coach Eric Villasenor hit the road on Friday, September 27, 2019 journeying down to Laredo, Texas to begin their quest for the 2019 District 14-5A Division I title by tangling with the perennially tough Laredo Martin Tigers mentored by former Mavericks head coach David Charles in a 7:30 PM district opening gridiron contest at Shirley Field. Both teams ventured into this game sporting identical overall season records of 2 wins and 2 losses. The valiant Mavericks battled their hearts out against the high scoring Tigers who entered this game averaging 42 points per game but the Mavericks fell short by the final score of 28 to 25.

The visiting Mavericks dented scoreboard first with an impressive 75 yard scoring drive that was capped off by quarterback Jose Padilla with a one yard keeper in the first quarter. Almikar Ramos tacked on the point after to give the Mavericks the early 7 to 0 lead over the Tigers.

In the second quarter the home standing Laredo Martin Tigers took the lead with a pair of touchdown runs the first of which was by running back Jose Castaneda from 27 yards out and the second one on a 6 yard run by their talented H-Back Dean Blondmonville. Tigers’ placekicker Kevin Mata converted on both point after attempts to give the Martin Tigers a 14 to7 lead.

Right before the end of the first half the Mavericks countered with a 25 yard field goal by place kicker Almikar Ramos to make the score 14 to 10 in favor of the Laredo Martin Tigers as both teams headed into their respective halftime locker rooms.

In the third quarter the Mavericks continued to employ their patented powerful ground game with quarterback Jose Padilla and their featured running back Ethan Johnston taking turns in toting the pigskin as the Mavericks orchestrated a scoring drive that culminated with a three yard blast into the end zone by Ethan Johnston. Almikar Ramos added the point after conversion to give the Mavericks a 17 to 14 lead over the Tigers.

The relentless Tigers fought back with a scoring drive of their own that was capped off with a 5 yard run to pay dirt by Dean Blondmonville. Kevin Mata tacked on the point after to give the Tigers a 21 to 17 lead over the Mavericks. In the fourth quarter the Tigers extended their lead with a five yard keeper by quarterback Gerardo Cham with Kevin Mata added the point after to give the Tigers a 28 to 17 lead in this game.

But with the heart of a true champion the proud C.C. Winn Mavericks did not fold and as usual they battled back with an impressive scoring drive that culminated with a well executed 11 yard reverse by wide receiver Ernesto Vasquez who waltzed into the end zone. The Mavericks then tacked on a two-point conversion pass from Jose Padilla to Jose Hinojosa to narrow their deficit to 28 to 25.

In the waning seconds of this game the Mavericks drove deep into Laredo Martin territory all the way to the Tigers 13 yard line where they were forced to attempt a potential game tying 30 yard field goal which placekicker Almikar Ramos had apparently converted right down the middle but the play had been stooped by the refs who had blown the whistle just right before the snap signaling that the Laredo Martin coaching staff had a called a time out to try and ice the kicker. Their strategy worked for on the ensuing field goal attempt the kick had more the enough distance but unfortunately it just barely sailed wide left by the less than a foot from its mark allowing the Laredo Martin Tigers to escape with the truly hard fought 28 to 25 victory over the Mavericks who truly deserved a much better fate.

All though the Mavericks wound up on the short end of the score there were several bright spots such that players never stopped battling throughout the entire game, the entire Mavericks defense have to be commended for their solid effort holding the Laredo Martin Tigers to way below their 42 points per game average and also caused and recovered four fumbles in this game and the Mavericks powerful ground oriented offense found success with 264 yards on the ground with three rushing touchdowns led by their featured running back who led all rushers with154 yards on 37 carries with one touchdown.

The Mavericks will regroup and reload their offensive arsenal for next Friday, October 4, 2019 when they host the San Antonio McCollum Cowboys in a 7:30 pm district gridiron matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. Eagle Pass Sports Central would like to wish the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks the very best of luck in your game against the McCollum Cowboys and invite the entire Maverick Nation as well as the community of Eagle Pass, Texas to come out to the stadium this coming Friday and support the mighty C.C.
