2019 29-6A Pigskin Preview

Eagles picked 3rd in District

The much anticipated and long awaited start of the 2019 Texas High School football season is just around the corner. Here on the local front the Eagle Pass Eagles under the guidance of head coach Tom Gonzalez will begin their respective first official preparations for the upcoming season bright and early at 7:00 AM on Monday, August 5, 2019 According to the pre-season prognosticators, the Eagles are picked to finish third in the District 29-6A race this season.

The Eagles return the services of 5 offensive and 3 defensive starters back from an Area finalist team that culminated last season with an overall season record of 9-3. The Eagles offense is expected to feature their talented backfield duo of hardnosed running tailback Jose Hernandez and Saul Perales along with wide receivers David Lopez and Jacob Ruiz i\with Allan Rodriguez predicted to take over the signal calling duties this season. The offensive front line will be patrolled by Alex Martinez and Emmanuel Balderas.

On the defensive side of the ball the Eagles stingy defense will feature standout defensive end Charlie Schuessler who is the ore-season favorite to win the Defensive District MVP Award along with stellar linebacker Jacob Salinas. Young Joe Samaniego expected to fill in one of the linebacker positions with Andres Conde, MJ McGehee and Marco Torres manning the defensive line. The Eagles defensive backs will feature veterans Kristian Barcena and Eric Heredia.

Also expected to contribute heavily this season with be wide receiver Armando De Los Santos, running back Isaac Caballero, defensive lineman Martin Rodriguez, defensive back Juan Guerra, offensive lineman Abraham Urdiales and offensive lineman Alonzo Carrasco.

The Eagles will give their Legion of Eagles faithful a preview of coming attractions with two scheduled scrimmages the first of which will be on Thursday, August 15, 2019 at 7:00 PM against the Somerset Bulldogs in Somerset, Texas and the second scrimmage will be on Thursday, August 22, 2019 at 7:00 PM against the Laredo Martin Tigers at Shirley Field in Laredo, Texas. The Eagles will then officially kickoff their season on Thursday, August 29, 2019 when they entertain the Uvalde Coyotes in a 7:00 PM non-district gridiron matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Eagles brain trust will have Tom Gonzalez as the head coach with Javier Cardenas as the offensive coordinator and Roger Olivas as the defensive coordinator.
