The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity baseball team under the guidance of head coach Reynol Mendoza concluded their respective Spring Break schedule with a road trip to Laredo, Texas on Friday, March 22, 2019 to take on the Laredo Alexander Bulldogs in a key 7:00 PM District 29-6A baseball diamond encounter at venerable Krueger Baseball Field. This game proved to be quite a pitching duel between the Eagles starting pitcher Rey Rey Mendoza and the Bulldogs starting hurler Paco Hernandez with scoring and hitting at a minimum.

The home standing Bulldogs dented the scoreboard first with a lone run in the bottom of the very first inning on a base on balls a base hit two stolen bases and a fielder’s choice. The Bulldogs then tacked on another lone run in the bottom of the second on two base on balls one wild pitch and two passed balls giving the Bulldogs the early 2 to 0 lead over the Eagles.

In the top of the third the Eagles countered with what proved to be their only run of this game with Jacob Ruiz drawing a one out walk, Rey Rey Mendoza followed with the only base hit of this game for the Eagles, Isaac Gonzalez reached safely on a fielder’s choice with Mendoza forced out at second and Jacob Ruiz coming home on an error by the Bulldogs shortstop.

But that proved to be all of the offensive output that either team would produce the rest of the night as both starting pitchers were simply dominant on the mound. Eagles starting pitcher Reye Rey Mendoza suffered the hard luck pitching loss hurling five and two-thirds innings of work allowing two runs, scattered only two hits, issued five bases on balls and struck out 8 batters on the night before being relieved by Sergio Lopez. Laredo Alexander Bulldogs’ starting and game winning hurler Paco Hernandez went the distance allowed one run allowed only one base hit issued three walks and struck out six batters to earn the narrow 2 to 1 victory over the Eagles. The loss gives the Eagles an overall season record of 10 wins with 10 losses and one tie and the district record falls to 2 wins with three losses which puts them in fourth place in the district race.
