The Eagle Pass Lady Eagles varsity softball team hit the road on Thursday, February 21, 2019 with a trip to San Antonio, Texas to participate in the three day Southwest ISD Invitational Softball Tournament where they faced some high caliber teams which will greatly be very beneficial to prepare themselves for the upcoming District 29-6A diamond battles.

The Lady Eagles played the entire tournament without the services of their standout starting power hitting catcher Brooke Diaz who sat out the entire tournament with an undisclosed injury. The Lady Eagles placed 3rd at this tournament winning four out of the six games they played. Eagle Pass Lady Eagles ace pitcher Kaitlin Galvan who had a phenomenal 1.09 E.R.A .during this tourney and Lady Eagles’ third baseman Alexandra Martinez were selected to the elite all-tournament team.

GAME 1

Paced by a 10 hit attack and the brilliant pitching of Kaitlin Galvan who hurled a complete five inning no-hitter and if not for an early error would have hurled a perfect game as she allowed just that one batter to reach base courtesy of that error but managed to retire the side in order in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th innings to earn the 8 to 0 victory in this tournament opener over the San Antonio Edison Lady Golden Bears. Leslie Martinez, Kaitlin Galvan and Alex Martinez each collected two base hits apiece in this game.

GAME 2

In their second game of the tournament the proud Lady Eagles hooked up in a real nail biter against the Cibolo Steele Lady Knights. Alyssa Lara led off the frame in the top of the second with a base hit, Paola Daniel reached on a bunt single, with one out Kaitlin Galvan was issued a base on balls to load the bases, Leslie Martinez was issued a base on balls also to bring home pinch runner Emily Rodriguez, Alex Martinez followed with an RBI single to drive in Paola Daniel to give the Lady Eagles an early 2 to 0 lead.

In the top of the third the Lady Eagles tacked on what would prove to be the game winning run when young second baseman Lashay Reyes smashed a one out single, Alyssa Lara followed with a double to put runners on second and third, Paola Daniel reached on an error which allowed the swift running Lashay Reyes to scamper home on the play.

In the bottom of the third the Lady Knights countered with a pair of runs to narrow their deficit only one run but that would prove to be all the damage they would muster but did threaten in the bottom of the forth as they loaded the bases with only one out but Lady Eagles ace hurler Kaitlin Galvan worked herself out of the jam to secure the 3 to 2 victory over the Lady Knights.

GAME 3

The third game of pool play at the Southwest ISD Tournament pitted the mighty Lady Eagles against their old nemesis the San Benito Lady Hounds in a rematch of last year’s third round post season matchup which saw the Lady Hounds eliminate the Lady Eagles in two games. This clash of two of the premier high school softball teams in Region IV Class 6A was not one for the faint of heart. Lady Eagles’ ace pitcher Kaitlin Galvan drew the starting nod inside the circle.

Leslie Martinez led off the game in the top of the first drawing a base on balls and promptly got into scoring position by stealing second, the next two natters struck out, Kaylenne Ruiz followed with an RBI double to drive in Leslie Martinez with the first run of the game. In the bottom of the second the Lady Hounds countered with a pair of runs greatly aided by a pair of Lady Eagles’ errors to take a 2 to 1 lead over the Lady Eagles.

In the top of third the proud Lady Eagles supported by the Loyal Legion of faithful fans in attendance answered back in dramatic fashion. With one out power hitting third baseman Alex Martinez blasted a solo homerun way over the left field fence to tie the ballgame at two runs apiece, catcher Lorelei Morales followed and drew a base on balls. after a sacrifice fly advanced courtesy runner Romy Flores over to second to set the stage for second baseman Lashay Reyes who stepped up to the plate and hit a fence rattling RBI triple to bring home Romy Flores with would eventually prove to be the game winning run.

In the bottom of the third San Benito had the potential game tying run at third with only one out but standout Lady Eagles hurler Kaitlin Galvan showcased why she is one of the all-time winningest pitchers in Lady Eagles history by striking out the next batter and then sealed the big victory by getting the last batter to fly out to Alyssa Lara in right field for the final out of this game as jubilation reigned on the Lady Eagles side of the field as they defeated the San Benito Lady Hounds by the final score of 3 to 2.

GAME 4

In their final game of pool play, the Lady Eagles were paired up against the Southwest Legacy Lady Titans who are coached by none other than one of the all-time great former Eagle Pass Lady Eagles and St. Mary’s University standout pitcher/catcher Alex Rodriguez. In this game the Lady Eagles gave their ace pitcher Kaitlin Galvan some much needed rest so the pitching duties were entrusted to young Alyssa Galvan who did an amicable job inside the circle. Paced by the hitting of Leslie Martinez, Lorelei Morales and Alex Martinez the Lady Eagles remained unbeaten at the Southwest ISD Tournament by defeating the Lady Titans by the final score of 5 to 3.

BRACKET PLAY

GAME I

In the first game of bracket play in the Gold Bracket on Saturday, the Lady Eagles squared off against the New Braunfels Lady Unicorns where the Lady Eagles quickly took the lead in this game with a lone run in the top half of the first inning with Alex Martinez reached on a one out hit by pitch, with two outs Kaylynne Ruiz stroked an RBI single to drive in Alex Martinez.

In the bottom of the second inning the Lady Unicorns greatly capitalized on a pair of Lady Eagles errors to tally three runs in that frame to eventually come away with the 3 to 1 victory over the Lady Eagles. Kaitlin Galvan who pitched more than well enough to win this game unfortunately was credited with the hard luck loss.

GAME II

In their second and final game of bracket play of the Southwest ISD Softball Tournament, the Lady Eagles were pitted against the eventual tournament champions the San Antonio MacArthur Lady Brahmas. Once again the Lady Eagles took the early lead in this game plating a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first inning with Leslie Martinez leading of the frame with a solid single, Alex Martinez followed with an RBI double to drive in Leslie Martinez, Lorelei Morales stepped up to the plate and belted an RBI single to bring home Alex Martinez, with two outs Lashay Reyes connected with a single but was left stranded on the base paths. This would prove to be the only damage the Lady Eagles would muster in this game.

The Lady Brahmas would then counter with a lone run in the top of the second and then tallied a pair of unearned runs courtesy of another costly error by the Lady Eagles in the top of the third to come away with the hard fought 3 to 2 victory over the valiant Lady Eagles.
