The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity boys’ cagers mentored by head basketball coach Paulo Valero and assistant coaches Julio Cumpian, Patrick Sanchez and Eric Ramos continued their holiday hoops schedule on Wednesday, January2, 2019 by entertaining the perennially tough Medina Valley Panthers in a 2:00 PM District 28-5A hoops matchup at the EPISD Student Activity Center Arena.

The following report courtesy of Coach Paulo Valero.

C.C. Winn basketball came into 2019 looking for their first district win of the season vs Medina Valley at the Student Activity Center. The Mavericks started off slow vs an eager Panther squad and were down quickly 10-0. After a timeout and a benching of all 5 starters the Mavericks were able to battle back making it a 5 point game before Medina Valley was able to make it a 19-9 game going into the 2nd.

The 2nd quarter was a game of runs and the Mavericks were led by Angel Huerta Moe Gaytan and Jairo Maldonado who were able to cut the lead down to 4 before the panthers made their own run and took a 31-21 lead into the half. The Mavericks were able to make one final run after Medina Valley took a 16 point lead Eduardo Nava and Jairo Maldonado hit 3 3 pointers but it was too late. The Mavericks legs were gone trying to climb uphill and Medina Valley was able to pull away with a final score that didn’t match the effort and fight the Mavericks put of 50-80.

The Mavericks were led by Moe Gaytan who had 18 points 10 rebounds and 2 steals followed by Jairo Maldonado who had 12 points 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Ángel Huerta managed 9 points of his own while Eduardo Nava pitches in with 6 points. The Mavericks next home game will be on Tuesday January 8th as they play host to undefeated Southwest at 630 pm at C.C. Winn High School gymnasium.
