McCollum Cowboys 37 to 17

Jose Blanco 5 catches 113 yards 2 TD’s

The C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football team mentored by head football coach Eric 5555Villasenor ventured to the Alamo City of San Antonio, Texas on Friday, October 5, 2018 to square-off against the McCollum Cowboys in a 7:30 PM District 14-5A Division I gridiron matchup at the famed Harlandale Memorial Stadium located on 4002 Roosevelt Ave. The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks entered this contest sporting an overall season record of 3-2 and a district mark of 0-1 while the home standing McCollum Cowboys came in with an overall season record of 0-5 and a district mark of 0-1.

The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks air and ground attack out matched the McCollum Cowboys as the Mavericks even their district record at 1-1 with a dominating 37 to17 victory over the Cowboys. The Mavericks patented fast hard hitting and stingy defense held McCollum to only 31 total yards rushing on 35 carries in this game recorded 5 quarterback sacks and had one interception return for a touchdown by defensive back Azael Rodriguez.

The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks supported by the Thundering Maverick Band as well as the famed Mavericks Nation in attendance broke into the scoring column first with a four play scoring drive capped off with a 25 yard Field Goal by placekicker Ernesto Fuentes with 8:59 showing on the first quarter clock.

The Mavericks stingy and swarming defense took their turn to get into the scoring column as Mavericks defensive back Azael Rodriguez intercepted a McCollum pass attempt and returned it 14 yards to pay dirt with only 26 seconds left in the opening quarter, Ernesto Fuentes converted the point after to give the Mavericks a 10 to 0 lead over the Cowboys.

But in the second quarter the home standing McCollum Cowboys countered back to tie up the ball game first with a 31 yard field goal by placekicker Brian Martinez with 6:03 left in the first half followed by a 25 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ryan Ramirez to his favorite target wide receiver Eric Laija with 1:16 remaining in the first half with Brian Martinez tacking on the game tying extra point as both teams headed to their halftime locker room.

During the halftime break Mavericks head football coach Eric Villasenor gathered his offensive, defensive and special teams coordinators to go over their overall evaluation of the first half of play as well as implement some changes to be utilized in the second half of this game.’ The changes paid off dividends as the Mavericks offense unleashed a potent passing game to compliment the patented ground game as the Mavericks exploded with 27 second half points.

The Mavericks broke up the 10 all tie with an 11 play 63 yard scoring drive capped off with a two yard blast into the end zone by running back Fernando Zapata with 2:43 left in the third quarter. The point after attempt failed but the Mavericks now had a 16 to 10 lead over the Cowboys.

The Mavericks then padded their lead with one second left in the third quarter on a three yard run to pay dirt by the multi-talented wide receiver Jared Roiz. The two-point conversion run attempt failed but the Mavericks now had extended their lead to 22 to10 lead in this game.

The McCollum Cowboys answered back with a 7 yard touchdown pass from Ryan Ramirez to wide receiver Jason Ramirez with Brian Martinez adding the point after to narrow the Cowboys; deficit to 22 to 17.

After the ensuing kickoff, it took the Mavericks just one play from scrimmage to tack on another score when quarterback Ethan Johnston connected with wide receiver Jose Blanco with a sensational 68 yard touchdown pass as Blanco outran the entire Cowboys defensive secondary unit on his way to the end zone with 9:11 left in the fourth quarter. Ernesto Fuentes converted the point after to give the Mavericks a 29 to 17 lead over the Cowboys,

The Mavericks then closed out the scoring for the night as well as sealed the victory with a five play scoring drive that culminated with a 28 yard touchdown pass from Ethan Johnston to Jose Blanco with 6:25 left in the game. Fernando Zapata tacked on the two-point conversion run to give the Mavericks the well earned 37 to 17 victory over the San Antonio McCollum Cowboys to improve their overall season record to 4-2 and even out their district record at 1-1. Jose Blanco wound up as the game’s leading receiver hauling in five receptions for 113 yards with a pair of touchdown pass receptions,

Hats off goes out to the mighty Mavericks defense who recorded 5 quarterback sacks caused two fumble had two fumble recoveries and one interception return for a touchdown from the likes of standout defensive lineman Ricardo Morales and teammates Jose Hinojosa, Javier Cerda, Alexis Ontiveros, Axel Rodriguez the stellar hard hitting line backing trio of Miguel De Los Santos, Patricio Hernandez, Alex Chris Garcia as well as defensive backs German Velasquez, Azael Rodriguez, Hector Nunez and Gilberto Vasquez who held the Cowboys; quarterback to negative 51 yards rushing on 8 carries with their famed relentless and aggressive pressure all game long. As well as the Mavericks unsung heroes the all-important offensive line who provided excellent pass protection and blocking throughout out the night.

The victorious C.C. Winn Mavericks will be home next Friday, October 12, 2018 where they will entertain the San Antonio Harlandale Indians in a key 7:30 PM District 14-5A Division I gridiron matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.
