Mavs inaugurate 13th gridiron season

, The highly anticipated opening kickoff to the 2018 Texas High Scholl football season is just around the corner. Here on the local front the mighty C.C Winn Mavericks under the direction of head football coach Eric Villasenor have commenced the traditional preparations for the upcoming season with their sights focused on capturing the District 14-5A championship where they will compete against several new district foes with the likes of the Laredo Martin Tigers, Southwest Legacy Titans, Southwest Dragons and San Antonio Harlan Hawks as well as returning district foes such as the Harlandale Indians and McCollum Cowboys.

The 2018 edition of the C.C. Winn Mavericks who are seeking not only to win the district title but also to continue garnering a berth in the post season for the third year in a row will give their famed Mavericks Nation a sneak preview of coming attractions with two controlled pre-season scrimmages the first of which will see the Mavericks venture to Carrizo Springs, Texas on Friday, August 17, 2018 to tangle with the Carrizo Springs Wildcats with kickoff time scheduled for 7:00 PM. In their second scrimmage the Mavericks will host the always tough Laredo United South Panthers who are one of the premier teams in District 29-6A on Friday, August 24, 2018 at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium with kickoff time scheduled for 10:00AM.

The mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football team officially kickoff their 2018 gridiron campaign on Friday, August 31, 2018 with a road trip to Crystal City, Texas to square off against the Crystal City Javelinas in a 7:30 PM non district season opener. On Friday, September 7, 2018 the Mavericks will host the tough Uvalde Coyotes in a 7:30 PM non-district game that is designated as Parent’s night Friday, September 14, 2018 will have the Mavericks returning home to host the Eagle Pass Eagles in their annual rivalry game with kickoff time scheduled for 7:30 in what is expected to be another jammed packed standing room only crowd in attendance. The Mavericks will then culminate their non-district portion of their schedule on Friday, September 1, 2018 when they journey to Pearsall, Texas to tangle with the Pearsall Mavericks in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron matchup.

The Mavericks will then kickoff their respective quest for the District 14-5A title on Friday, September 28, 2018 when they entertain the Laredo Martin Tigers in a 7:30 district opening matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. Friday, October 5, 2018 will see the Mavericks journey to San Antonio, Texas to tangle with the McCollum Cowboys in a 7:30 PM district contest. The Mavericks come home on Friday, October 12, 2018 to entertain the Harlandale Indians in a 7:30 PM district gridiron encounter. On Saturday, October 20, 2018 the Mavericks continue their district schedule with a road trip to San Antonio, Texas to kickoff against the Harlan Hawks in a 7:00 PM matchup at Dub Farris stadium. The Mavericks have an open date on Friday, October 26, 2018 but return to the gridiron on Friday, Novenber 2, 2019 to host the Southwest Legacy Titans in a 7:30 PM contest which will also be designated as .C. Winn High School’s Homecoming game. The Mavericks will then conclude their district schedule on Friday November 9, 2018 when they venture to San Antonio, Texas to square-off against the Southwest Dragons in a 7:30 PM district finale that could very well determine the District championship with the two top teams in the district battling each other on the gridiron.

The Mavericks will return the services of 8 offensive and 6 defensive starters from a bi-district finalist squad. Spear heading the Mavericks offense will be their highly talented dual-threat junior quarterback Ethan Johnston who was the team’s leading rusher last season with nearly 800 yards on the ground with 9 rushing touchdowns. Johnston was also the team’s leading passer with 950 yards via the airway tossing 5 TD passes. Expected to join him in the backfield will be running back Mark Cardenas who will handle the majority of the rushing attack chores for the Mavericks. When the Mavericks take to the airway a solid bevy of wide receivers the likes of Justis Roiz, Jared Roiz, Jose Blanco, Raul Solis and Ernest Vasquez will be entrusted to tote the mail to the promise land. Jaime Rodriguez and Miguel Nino will help anchor the traditionally massive Mavericks offensive front line.

The well renowned Mavericks aggressive, quick pursuing and hard hitting Mavericks defense will be led by their standout linebacker Miguel De Los Santos who led the team with 125 tackles last season as well as fellow linebacker Patricio Hernandez. The Mavericks defensive front line will be anchored by a pair of stellar standouts the likes of defensive end Ricardo Morales who recorded 98 tackles and registered a total of 8 QB Sacks last year, defensive tackle Martin Rodriguez and defensive end Alejandro Ontiveros. Veteran Domingo Duran will headline the perennial ball hawking and hard hitting defensive secondary and will be joined by Joey Aguilar.

The 2018 C.C. Winn Mavericks’ football coaching staff will be comprised by head football coach Eric Villasenor, Heriberto Roiz who serves as the Mavericks offensive coordinator and quarterback coach, Rene Ramirez who will continue to serve as the co-defensive coordinator as well as the defensive backs coach, Saul Salas will also continue to serve as the co-defensive coordinator as well as the linebackers coach, Carlos Soto will be the running backs coach as well as the co-special teams coordinator, J.J. Iracheta, Jr. will once again be the defensive line coach as well as the co-special teams coordinator, The remainder of the varsity coaching staff will be comprised by Fred Paniagua as the outside receivers coach, Isaac Gracia as the inside receivers coach, Domingo Lopez as the offensive line coach, Johnny Hernandez as the defensive ends coach and Ricardo Hoffman as the defensive backs coach,

The Mavericks sub-varsity coaching staff will be comprised by Paulo Valero, Tony Martinez and Randy Garza mentoring the freshmen team with Rolando Salinas, Jr. and Eric Ramos coaching the Memorial Jr. High 8th grade squad and Chris Biddle and Roberto Hoffman leading the Memorial Jr. High School 7th grade squad.

The pre-season prognosticators have pegged the Southwest Dragons as the favorite to win the District 14-5A crown with the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks finishing second in the district race with the San Antonio Harlan Hawks coming in the third followed by the Laredo Martin Tigers placing fourth the Harlandale Indians picked to finish fifth Southwest Legacy Titans placing sixth and the McCollum Cowboys winding up in seventh place. However all games are always won on the gridiron turf and certainly not in the Friday night post game Bleacher Club nor at the abundant Saturday morning Coffee Shop Quarterback Clubs. Nevertheless the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks who are well known to never back down from any and all challenges will be more than ready for the upcoming season supported by the famed Mavericks Nation who game in and game out show up very early filling up the entire home side of the stadium ready to cheer on their beloved Mavericks.
