Lady Eagles take comeback thriller

Over Del Rio Queens 6 to 5

The playoff bound Eagle Pass Lady Eagles varsity girls’ softball team concluded their 2018 regular and district season on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 by entertaining their longtime nemeses the Del Rio Queens in a key 7:00 PM District 29-6A softball diamond matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center softball field.

The visiting Del Rio Queens entered their season finale currently in sixth place in the district race with a record of 3 and 10 while the home standing Eagle Pass Lady Eagles came in currently in sole possession of third place in district play with a mark of 9 and 4. This game proved to be a typical Eagle Pass vs Del Rio battle no matter what sport it may be. This contest was a real nail biter that would not be decided until the very end.

The visiting Del Rio Queens playing for pride broke into the scoring column first with a lone run in the top of the very first inning on a one out solo homerun off the bat of Queens second baseman Ariana Alcaraz to take a 1 to 0 lead over the Lady Eagles. In the top of the fourth the Queens padded their lead with another lone run with third baseman Izzy Guardado leading off the frame with a double and coming home on Alejandra Rodriguez’s RBI single to take a 2 to 0 lead over the Lady Eagles.

The home standing Lady Eagles quickly countered in the bottom half of the fourth with a game tying two run out put with standout catcher and the team’s leading hitter and RBI producer catcher Brooke Diaz who would wind up with a big night at the plate blasting a double to lead off the frame, with one out Leslie Martinez one the Lady Eagles top three hitters followed with a ringing RBI double to drive in Brooke Diaz, Kaylynne Ruiz stroked an RBI single to tally Leslie Martinez with the game tying run.

In the top of the fifth the Lady Eagles broke up the tie with another two run production with Heather Ruiz leading off with a double, Brooke Diaz continue to swing a red hot bat by connecting with a booming fence rattling RBI double to bring home Heather Ruiz with the tie breaking run, a pair of throwing errors enabled Brooke Diaz to circle the bases and come home to score to give the Lady Eagles a 4 to 2 lead over the Queens much to the delight of the Loyal Legion of Lady Eagles faithful in attendance.

The Lady Eagles took that lead to the top of the seventh where disaster nearly struck as the Queens capitalized on a pair of Lady Eagles errors enabling the Del Rio Queens to take a 5 to 4 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh the proud Eagle Pass Lady Eagles with the heart of a true champion fought back with Kayla Ochoa leading off the frame reaching on a hit by pitch, with one out Brooke Diaz continued to dominate the plate both offensively and defensively coming through with her third double of this game to put runners at second and third with only one out, Alexandra Martinez drew a walk to load the bases, the Del Rio pitcher then uncorked a wild pitch enabling Kayla Ochoa to come home with the tying run with Brooke Diaz advancing to third and Alexandra Martinez taking second on the play, Leslie Martinez drew a walk to reload the bases, pinch hitter Lorelei Morales batting for Kaylynne Ruiz came through with a game winning RBI single to drive in Brooke Diaz with the final run of this game giving the Lady Eagles the well earned and thrilling 6 to 5 victory over the gutsy Del Rio Queens to secure third place in District 29-6A. Leenette Krezdorn who took over the pitching chores from starting hurler Kaitlin Galvan in the fifth inning earned the pitching victory. Brooke Diaz who raised her team leading batting average to ,442 was selected the Player of the Game by MaxPreps going 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI on three booming doubles in this game. The Eagle Pass Lady Eagles thus advance to the post season playoffs for the 16th consecutive year and the 20th out of 25 tears in their famed storied history. Their playoff opponent, date, site and time are yet to be determined.
