Southside Lady Cardinals 3 to 2

To set new record for most wins in a season

The playoff bound C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity girls’ softball squad under the leadership of head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr. and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Benavidez and Roly Salinas made their final regular and district season road trip on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 when they ventured to the Alamo City of San Antonio, Texas to square off against the Southside Lady Cardinals in a 7L00 PM softball diamond matchup.

The C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks currently in sole possession of third place in district play entered this game with a district mark of 5-3 while the home standing Lady Cardinals came in with a winless district record of 0-8. The visiting Lady Mavericks took a thrilling 3 to 2 victory over the Lady Cardinals to improve their season record to 22 wins with 10 losses to set an all-time best season record in school history breaking the previous mark 0f 21 wins with 11 losses set back in 2015.

The Lady Mavericks opened the scoring in this game with a two run output in the top of the second inning with Daniela Rodriguez belting a one out singe ad taking second on an error, Kayla Sifuentes followed with an RBI single to drive in Daniela Rodriguez with Sifuentes advancing all the way to third on an error on the play, Briana Soto lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Kayla Sifuentes to give the Lady Mavericks a 2 to 0 lead in this game.

The home standing Lady Cardinals countered with a two run production in the bottom of the third on a pair of hits and a Lady Mavericks error. The proud Lady Mavericks quickly broke up the tie with a lone run in the top of the fourth with Ariana Soto leading of the frame with a solid single, with one out Kayla Sifuentes grounded out to the third with Ariana Soto taking second on the play, with two outs Briana Soto came through with a clutch RBI single to bring home her twin sister Ariana Soto to give the Lady Mavericks a 3 to 2 lead.

The remainder of the game was entrusted to the pitching arm of Lady Mavericks starting hurler Angie Escamilla who held the Lady Cardinals scoreless the last four innings in the game to go the distance allowing two runs and two hits to earn the pitching victory by the final score of 3 to 2 with the Lady Mavericks clinching third place in the district race with a district mark of 6-3 and also setting an all-time school record for most victories in a season.
