The C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity girls’ softball team under the tutelage of head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr., and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Benavidez and Roly Salinas journeyed to Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 to tangle with the Uvalde Lobos in a key 7:00 PM District 28-5A softball diamond matchup. The visiting Lady Mavericks ventured into this contest currently perched in third place in the district race with a district record of 3-2 while the home standing Lobos came in currently in second place in district with a mark of 4-1.

The visiting Lady Mavericks opened up their second round of district action seeking revenge for their heartbreaking one run loss to the Lobos in nine innings in their first game against them in district action. The proud Lady Mavericks managed to dent the scoreboard first with a three run output in the top half of the third inning with Martha Garcia reaching on a two out fielder’s choice, Daniela Rodriguez followed with a single, Jasmin Ballones drew a walk to load the bases and set the table for talented first baseman Ariana Soto who stepped up to the plate and delivered a booming base clearing fence rattling three RBI triple to bring home Martha Garcia, Daniela Rodriguez and Jasmin Ballones to give the Lady Mavericks a 3 to 0 lead over the Lobos.

However the lead did not last long as the home standing Lobos countered back with a three run production in the bottom of the third on three consecutive hits and a Lady Mavericks error to knot up the scoreboard at three runs apiece. The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth when the Uvalde Lobos broke up the tie with another three run production highlighted by a two run home run by Denise Longoria off of Lady Mavericks’ relief and eventual losing hurler Angie Escamilla who took over the pitching chores from starting hurler Amy Flores.

The Lady Mavericks had an excellent opportunity to answer back in the top of the sixth when they got their first two hitters on with no outs but unfortunately failed to bring them stranding both runners on base as the eventually fell to the Lobos by the final score of 6 to 3 but remained currently perched in third place in the district race.
