The playoff contending C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks’ varsity girls’ softball team under the guidance of head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr., and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Benavidez and Roly Salinas ventured to San Antonio, Texas on Friday, March 30, 2018 to tangle with the current district leading San Antonio Harlandale varsity girls softball squad in a key 5:00PM softball diamond matchup. The visiting Lady Mavericks entered this matchup currently in third place in the district race with a district mark of 3-1 while the home standing Harlandale crew came in leading the league with an unblemished district record of 4-0.

Harlandale managed to take the early lead in this game by plating a lone run in the bottom half of the very first inning with a walk to the leadoff batter, a one out single, a fielder’s choice and an RBI by their starting pitcher Raven Segura to take a1 to 0 lead over the Lady Mavericks.

The proud Lady Mavericks supported by the famed Mavericks Nation in attendance quickly countered with a game tying run in the top half of the second inning with Kayla Sifuentes leading off the frame with a solid single, with one out Anissa Salazar belted a single to put runners at the corners, Thiana Reyes came through with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to drive in Kayla Sifuentes with the game tying run.

The game remained tied at 1 run apiece in thanks to a good pitching duel between Harlandale’s hurler Raven Segura and the Lady Mavericks starting pitcher Angie Escamilla. In the bottom of the sixth Harlandale broke up the one all tied with a pair of runs to take a 3 to 1lead over the Lady Mavericks who had several chances to score some runs but unfortunately left the runners stranded unable to pull the trigger on a much needed base hit.

In the top of the seventh the Lady Mavericks had two runners on base but once again failed to bring the two runners home enabling Harlandale to escape with the hard fought 3 to 1 victory over the Lady Mavericks who truly deserved a much better fate in this game.
