The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity base ball squad mentored by head coach Reynol Mendoza and assistant coaches Henry Silva and Chris Villa having had their Tuesday night game vs. Del Rio postponed by Mother Nature, returned on Wednesday to the Queen City of Del Rio, Texas on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 to renew their longtime series against the oldest rival the Del Rio Rams in a 5:00 PM District 20-6A baseball diamond encounter. The Eagle Pass-Del Rio high school baseball series dates back to the early 1920’s.

The visiting Eagles continued their quest for the district title by tallying a lone run in the top half of the very first inning to take the early lead in this game. Rey Rey Mendoza led off the game with a double, with one out Dee Andre Torres drew a walk, with two outs Hector Montoya came through with an RBI single to bring home Rey Rey Mendoza.

In the bottom of the first the home standing Rams tied up the ballgame by tallying a lone unearned run on an error a wild pitch and a ground out. The Eagles quickly countered with a pair of runs in the top of the third to take the lead for good in this game. With two outs Isaac Roque belted a single, Dee Andre Torres also stroked a single; Braulio Rodriguez reached on an error enabling Isaac Roque to score on the play, Hector Montoya came through once again with an RBI single to drive in Dee Andre Torres to give the Eagles a 3 to1 lead.

In the bottom half of the fourth the Rams narrowed their deficit with another lone unearned run courtesy of a throwing error. But the proud Eagle Pass Eagles stormed back to extend their lead in the top of the fifth with a two out three run output with Dee Andre Torres connecting with a single and advancing to second on a wild pitch, Braulio Rodriguez belted an RBI single to bring home Dee Andre Torres, Hector Montoya collected his third hit of the game with a single, pinch Runner Victor Perry and pinch runner Caleb Maldonado then pulled off a double steal, CJ Jimenez reached on an error allowing both Victor Perry and Caleb Maldonado to score on the play to give the Eagles a 6 to 2 lead over the Rams.

In the top of the sixth the Eagles tacked on alone run with pinch hitter Orly Garza leading off the frame with a single and replaced on the base paths by Derek Ibarra who reentered the game and promptly stole second and third respectively, with one out Rey Rey Mendoza stroked and RBI double to drive in Derek Ibarra to make the score 7 to 2 in favor of the Eagles.

That lead proved to be more than enough for the Eagles young starting and eventual game winning hurler Eric Heredia who hurled six solid complete innings of play allowing two unearned runs and scattered just four hits in his six innings of work on the mound.

For good measure the Eagles added a lone insurance run in the top of the seventh with Victor Perry leading off the frame with a solid single and promptly got into scoring position by stealing second, with two outs Derek Ibarra drove in Victor Perry with an RBI single.

In the bottom of the seventh relief pitcher Roly Riza retired the side in order to preserve the well earned 8 to victory for the Eagle Pass Eagles who culminate the first round of district play with a district mark of 5-2 to remain tied for second place in the district race along with the S.A. Southwest Dragons.
