The C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity girls’ softball team under the guidance of head coach JJ Iracheta, Jr., and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Benavidez and Roly Salinas journeyed to Floresville, Texas on Thursday, March 15, 2018 to open their respective District 29-6A softball schedule with a 2:00 PM softball diamond encounter against the Floresville Lady Jaguars with the famed Maverick Nation in attendance.

The visiting Lady Mavericks who have been on a hot streak took the lead in the very top of the very first inning with a three run production. Martha Garcia led off the game drawing a base on balls and promptly stole second, Kayla Sifuentes reached on an error with Martha Garcia taking third on the play, Ariana Soto grounded out to second to drive in Martha Garcia with the first run of the game, with two outs Daniela Rodriguez reached on an error enabling Kayla Sifuentes to score on the play, Jasmin Ballones followed with a single with Daniela Rodriguez advancing to third on the play, Ballones quickly stole second to get into scoring position, Daniela Rodriguez then came home courtesy of a passed ball to give the Lady Mavericks a 3 to 0 lead over the stunned Lady Jaguars.

I the top of the second, the Lady Mavericks padded their lead with a pair of runs with Anissa Salazar leading off the frame with a walk, Kiana Diaz successfully sacrificed Salazar over to second with a well placed bunt, Martha Garcia followed with a single enabling Anissa Salazar to scamper all the way to third on the play, Martha Garcia then got into scoring position by stealing second, Kayla Sifuentes reached on an error allowing both runners to score of the play to give the mighty Lady Mavericks a 5 to 0 lead which gave Lady Mavericks staring and eventual game winning hurler Angie Escamilla plenty of cushion to work with.

But in the bottom of the third, the Lady Jaguars narrowed their deficit with a pair of runs as reliever Amy Flores replaced Angie Escamilla inside the circle and hurled two inning of solid relief before being replaced by starting hurler Angie Escamilla. The Lady Mavericks tacked on what would prove to be the lone game winning run in the top of the sixth with Kiana Diaz reaching on a fielder’s choice and eventually coming around to score on a passed ball to give the Lady Mavericks a 6 to lead.

That lone run by the Lady Mavericks proved to be quite valuable as the Lady Jaguars mounted a three run production in the bottom of the sixth but the Lady Mavericks solid defense and hurler Angie Escamailla allowed no further damage to come away with the well earned 6 to5 district opening victory over the Floresville Lady Jaguars.

Although they were held to only two hits in this game the Lady Mavericks’ coaching staff implemented the small ball tactic which worked to perfection forcing the action with bunts, steals, hit and run and sacrifices which rattled the Floresville Lady Jaguars to commit errors and enabled the Lady Mavericks to work their way around the base paths to manufacture runs which is logical when you are struggling at the plate. The C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks thus improve their overall season record to 16-7 with a 1-0 mark in district play. WAY TO GO LADY MAVERICKS!
