The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity boys baseball squad under the tutelage of head coach Reynol Mendoza and assistant coaches Henry Silva and Chris Villa resumed their Spring Break schedule on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 when they entertained the South San Bobcats in a 2:00PM District29-6A baseball diamond encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Polo Moncada Baseball Field. Back in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s these two tradition rich high school baseball programs put on some legendary hard fought matchups against each other. This year’s encounter between these two programs had the atmosphere of a playoff game.

The home standing Eagles wasted no time in taking the lead in this game by plating three runs in the bottom of the second with Christian Del Bosque leading off the frame with a walk, courtesy runner Kristian Barcena promptly stole second, David Lopez was hit by a pitch Barcena and Lopez advanced to third and second respectively courtesy of a wild pitch, with two outs Isaac Gonzalez stroked a two RBI single to drive in Kristian Barcena and David Lopez with Isaac Gonzalez taking second on an error, Rey Rey Mendoza brought Isaac Gonzalez with an RBI single to give the Eagles the early 3 to 0 lead.

In the top of the fourth the Bobcats countered with what proved to be the only run of this game but the Eagles quickly got that run back plus one more in the bottom of the fourth with Dee Andre Torres drawing a one out walk, Isaac Roque singled to put runners at the corners, Braulio Rodriguez belted an RBI single to deliver Dee Andre Torres home, Christian Del Bosque lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to left to bring home Isaac Roque giving the Eagles a comfortable 8 to 1lead.

The Eagles then closed out the scoring with a lone run in the bottom of the fifth with pinch hitter CJ Jimenez leading off the frame with a single, Isaac Gonzalez also singled, Rey Rey Mendoza was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Dee Andre Torres drew a bases loaded walk to bring home CJ Jimenez with the 8th and final run of this game with the proud Eagle Pass Eagles taking the 9 to 1 victory over the South San Bobcats. The Eagle Pass Eagles thus improve their overall season record to 5-12 and their district mark to 2-1.

The Eagles pitching staff of starting and winning pitcher Braulio Rodriguez who hurled five strong innings with relief ace Eric Heredia ptching a scoreless sixth and Alex Luna closing out the game with a scoreless seventh should be highly commended for their quality work on the mound.
