The red hot C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity softball team under the guidance of head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr., Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Benavidez, and Sergio Esquivel journeyed to Seguin, Texas to compete in the Annual Seguin Invitational Softball Tournament.

The mighty C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity Girls softball crew faced some high powered high caliber and State ranked teams during the tournament where they more than held their own against their opposition, The predominately youthful Lady Mavericks unfortunately started tournament action pitted against the very powerful Calallen Lady Wildcats who feature a flame throwing pitcher that handcuffed the young Lady Mavericks on a No Hitter as the Lady Mavs dropped the tournament opener by the final score of 9 to 1.

The proud Lady Mavericks rebounded in their second game of the tourney to take a nail biting thriller over San Diego by the score of 8 to 7 stranding the potential game tying and game winning runs on second and first on a game ending groundout to third.

Friday however, was not kind to the Lady Mavericks as they dropped both games to a pair of perennially playoff bound squads the likes of the Seguin Lady Matadors by the score of 8 to 0 and the La Vernia Lady Bears by the score of 7-0.

With the heart of a true champion, the Lady Mavericks came back with a vengeance on Saturday to bring home two more victories over a pair of high caliber teams the likes of Victoria East by the score of 6 to5 highlighted by a booming two RBI homerun by standout Lady Mavs catcher Briana Soto. The Lady Mavericks closed out their tournament action with a convincing 7 to 1 victory over the Boerne Lady Hounds to come away with three victories out of the six games they played at the tournament.

The entire Lady Mavericks’ offense and defense got some invaluable experience against very tough competition that will certainly pay off dividends once District 29-5A action gets underway as did their young dynamic pitching duo of Angie Escamilla and Amy Flores who more than held their own against some very potent lineups. The Lady Mavericks improve their overall season record to 9-4. Way to Go Lady Mavericks!
