The C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity girls’ basketball squad under the direction of head coach Paulo Valero and assistant coaches Federico Paniagua, Julio Cumpian and Tonya Rosas made their first district road trip of the season on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 when they ventured to Uvalde, Texas to tip off against the Uvalde Lobos in a 6:30PM District 29-5A hoops encounter.

The visiting Lady Mavericks came out in a feeling out process in the opening quarter seeking to see what was open and how Uvalde was going to set up their defensive strategy for this contest.  The Lady Mavericks were able to take the early 7 to 4 lead in this game after one quarterof play.

In the second period the Lady Mavericks picked up the offensive tempo getting key scoring production by Silvy Salazar, Gyslle Rangel, Karyme Marquez and Destiny Sukue while the Lady Mavericks stingy defense held Uvalde to only three points in that period enabling the Lady Mavericks to take a 19 to 8 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half of this contest the Lady Mavericks quick footed suffocating defense had a block party as they registered whopping total of 15 blocked shots in this game and also forced a total of 376 turnovers with 24 steals and managed to hold Uvalde’s top player to no points scored in this game.  The entire Lady Mavericks roster got into the scoring column as the Lady Mavericks continued their winning ways with a convincing 41 to 18 victory over the Uvalde Lobos with Silvy Salazar taking high point scoring honors with 11 points followed by teammate Gyselle Rangel who contributed 10 points to the winning cause.  Ashley Cruz led the team in steals with a total of 10 while Silvy Salazar also led the team in rebounds with 9 boards and in blocked shots with 7.

Player of the Game: Karyme Marquez who converted buzzer beater shots at the end of the first and second quarters to give the Lady Mavericks the momentum they needed in this game.
