The C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity boys basketball team under the leadership of head coach JT Sanchez and assistant coaches Juan Antonio Tovar and Eric Ramos returned to the hard court on Tuesday, January 2, 2017 to host the Somerset Bulldogs in a 6:45 PM non-district post holidays hoops encounter at the C.C. Winn High School gymnasium.

The home standing Mavericks stored out of their pregame warm-up ritual with a red hot shooting touch in the opening period getting point production from Eddie Aranda, Guillermo Gaytan and Juan Castilla to light up the scoreboard with 17 points in that period while the Mavericks defense held the visiting Bulldogs to a measly three points in that first period.

In the second period of this contest the visiting Bulldogs began to assert themselves inside the paint with their twin towers dominating the boards both offensively and defensively and got their point guard going as they fought back to get into this game by outscoring the Mavericks 20 to 18 in the second quarter as the Mavericks held a seemingly comfortable 35 to23 lead at the halftime break.

The third quarter which Mavericks’ head coach JT Sanchez calls their season long Achilles heel was not kind to the silver and black clad Mavericks as the Somerset Bulldogs outscored the Mavericks 17 to 6 in that period to narrow their deficit to only one point heading to the fourth and final period of this game.

In the fourth quarter the Mavericks got scoring production from Juan Morales, Antonio Flores and Eliab Chaves to take a five point lead in the game but a couple of turnovers enabled the visiting Bulldogs to comeback and  tie the game at 62 all at the end of regulation play to send this game into overtime.

Lady Luck was not kind to the C.C. Winn Mavericks in the overtime period however as the Somerset Bulldogs outscored the Mavericks 9 to 3 in that period to come away with the hard fought 71 to 65 victory over the Mavericks.  Eddie Aranda led all Mavericks scorers with 17 points.  Guillermo Gaytan pitched in with 12 points and Juan Castilla contributed10 points.
