The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity boys cagers mentored by head coach JT Sanchez and assistant coaches Juan Antonio Tovar and Eric Ramos ventured to the Spinach Capital of the World on Monday, November 27, 2017 to tip off against the home standing Crystal City Javelinas in a 7:30 PM non-district rematch of the previous week’s matchup between these two squads at the C.C. Winn High School gymnasium one in which the Mavericks simply dominated by the final score of 72 to 28 in a game that coach JT Sanchez stated that this was not the usual Crystal City squad due to the fact that their main players were still playing in the football playoffs.
This time around the home team Javelinas were all full strength and the game reflected that as this game proved to be quite a barn burner with the lead exchanging hands back and forth as both teams played their hearts out battling hard at both ends of the court. The proud Mavericks would prevail at the final buzzer by the final score of 54 to 52 with Juan “JC” Castilla leading the victorious Mavs in the scoring department with a team high 19 points. Teammate Eduardo Aranda also joined him in double figures contributing 17 points to the winning cause.
During his post game interview Mavericks head coach JT Sanchez stated “Thisis more like the Crystal City basketball team we expect to see. Plus, playing in Crystal City is a tough place to pull out a win. We did get off to a slow start but never wavered. Our perimeter shooting was off but that is something we need to work on in someone else’s gym. It was a good win for us. This one felt so much better than the 72 to 28 victory o the week before.”
