The 2017 Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the direction of head football coach Tom Gonzalez culminated their season venturing into the post season for the first time since 2013. The Eagles who were picked to finish sixth in the district race by the preseason prognosticators set out to prove them wrong. Mission accomplished the Eagles culminated the season with an outstanding overall season record of 9-3 and a District 29-6A ci-championship mark of 6-1. The Eagles advanced into the post season where they captured the UIL Region IV bi-district crown with a dominating 52 to 21defeat of the McAllen Bulldogs before being eliminated in the UIL Region IV area round by Edinburg Vela.
The Eagles showcased a very potent and quick striking offense via the ground with standout Dee Andre Torres the District 29-6A Most Valuable Offensive Player of the year rushing for over 1300 yards and tallying 16 rushing touchdowns as well as through the airway with stellar signal caller Richie Luna becoming only the second ever quarterback to pass for over 2000 yards in a single season in school history tossing 16 touchdown passes on the season spreading the wealth amongst the Eagles talented, swift and sure handed quartet of receivers the likes of Norby Zavala, Jose Riojas, Rey Mendoza and Albert Guevara.
The Eagles also showcased a very aggressive and hard hitting defensive unit spearheaded by standout defensive tackle Sebastian Hernandez who was voted the District 29-6A Most Valuable Defensive Player of the Year along with defensive end Moi Rocha and defensive back Josh Monsivais who were the only two Eagles unanimous first team all-district selections as well as standout linebacker David Kypuros and young stellar safety Ryan Chisum.
