Coming off their thrilling victory over the Laredo Alexander Bulldogs this past Friday night, the Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the tutelage of head coach Tom Gonzalez will ventured to Laredo, Texas on Thursday, September 28, 2017 to continue their District 29-6A gridiron battles by tangling with the Laredo LBJ Wolves in a 7:00 PM matchup at the United ISD Bill Johnson Student Activity Center.

The home standing Laredo LBJ Wolves entered this contest sporting an overall season record of 0-4 and a district mark of 0-1.  The visiting Eagle Pass Eagles came in sporting an overall season mark of 3-1and a district record of 1-0. After a low scoring first half of play the Eagle Pass Eagles erupted in the second half with a prolific aerial show to defeat the LBJ Wolves by the final score of 41to 9.

After a surprisingly scoreless first quarter of play one in which each team was forced to punt on their respective four first quarter possessions, the Eagles stingy defense set up the first touchdown of the game when defensive back Raul Lechler intercepted an LBJ pass attempt at the Laredo LBJ 31 yard line.  The Eagles offense with their standout running back Dee Andre Torres forced to take over the signal calling duties from starting quarterback Richie Luna who suffered a leg injury during the first offensive series of the first quarter. The Eagles offense capitalized on the turnover capping off the 31yard scoring drive with a five yard scamper into the end zone by slot back Jose Riojas with 4:09 left in the second period.  Jose Riojas tacked on the point after to give the Eagles a 7to 0 lead over the Wolves.

Late in the first half the Eagles offense coughed up the pig skin deep in their own territory with the Wolves recovering the errant pig skin at the Eagle Pass 13 yard line but the Eagles defense stood their ground and forced the Wolves to settle for a 26 yard field goal by placekicker Gabriel Garcia with only four seconds left before halftime.

The Eagles received the second half kickoff and immediately unleashed a potent offensive assault through the ground and via the airway as they extended their lead with a four play 70 yard scoring drive culminating with a 37 yard keeper to pay dirt by quarterback Dee Andre Torres with 10:34 showing on the third quarter clock.  Jose Riojas split the uprights with the point after to give the Eagles a 14 to 3 lead in this game.

On their next offensive series of the second half the Eagles offense went back to work this time producing a six play 63 yard scoring drive punctuated with a 9 yard scamper to pay dirt by quarterback Dee Andre Torres with just 19 seconds left in the third quarter.  Jose Riojas converted the point after to extend the Eagles lead to 21 to 3over the Wolves heading to the fourth and final period of this game,

At this point the Eagles showcased their potent aerial assault as quarterback Dee Andre Torres completed his last 12 consecutive passes of this game which produced a pair of TD passes to the tall athletic and sure handed wide receiver Rey Mendoza the first of which was 31 yards with 8:32 showing on the game clock.  The point after attempt was no good but the Eagles had now padded their lead to 27 to 3 over the Wolves. The second touchdown pass to Rey Mendoza was from 37 yards outs with 6:49 left on the fourth quarter.  Jose Riojas tacked o the point after to give the Eagles a comfortable 34 to 3 lead over the Wolves.

The Eagles offensive reserves got in some action late in the game and they too managed to get into the scoring parade as backup young sophomore signal caller Alan Rodriguez tallied with a one play 44 yard sprint into the end zone with 4:15 left in the game.  Jose Riojas converted the final point for the Eagles to extend their lead to an insurmountable 41 to 3 over the stunned Wolves.

The home standing Wolves finally were able to find the end zone late in the game against the Eagles backup defensive unit with a 60 yard dash to pay dirt by running back Rupert Landa with 3:32 left in the game.  The point after attempt was no good which enabled the visiting Eagle Pass Eagles to come away with the convincing 41 to 9 victory over the Laredo LBJ Wolves to improve their overall season record to 4-1 and a perfect 2-0 record in district play.

Eagles quarterback Dee Andre Torres had a banner night finishing as the team’s leading rusher with 73 yards on 16 carries and tallied a pair of rushing touchdown. Torres also completed 18 out of 24 pass attempts for a whopping game high 252 yards with two TD passes sharing the wealth with his quartet of sure handed receivers the likes of Albert Guevara who hauled in six passes for 47 yards, Jose Riojas with four receptions for 58 yards, Norby Zavala with four receptions for 73 yards and Rey Mendoza who had three pass receptions two of which were for touchdowns for a team high 76 yards.  The entire Eagles starting defense known as the “Land Sharks” also had a banner night as they only allowed a total of 32 yards passing out of the 32 pass attempted in this game by the LBJ Wolves and registered a pair of interceptions one by Raul Lechler and the other one by Nico Moyeda and also put up a gallant defensive goal line stand to close the game against the Wolves stuffing the Wolves running back to no gain on a fourth and goal at the Eagle Pass 3 yard line as time expired.

The Eagles have an open date next week and will resume their district gridiron battles on Friday, October 13, 2017 when they will host the tough South San Bobcats in a key 7:30 PM matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Eagle Pass Sports Central congratulates the mighty Eagle Pass Eagles on their impressive 41 to 9 victory over the Laredo LBJ Wolves and wish you continued success.
