The Pride of Southern Maverick County the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football squad under the tutelage of head football coach Eric Villaseñor traveled  to Laredo, Texas on Friday, September 8, 2017 to tangle with the Laredo LBJ Wolves in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron encounter at the United ISD Student Activity Center.

After forcing the Mavericks to punt on their first offensive series of the game, the home standing Laredo LBJ Wolves orchestrated 73-yard scoring drive that culminated witha25 yard field goal by placekicker Gabriel Garcia to give the Wolves the early 3 to 0 lead over the Wolves.

In their second offensive series of the game Mavericks young sophomore quarterback Ethan Johnson took over the reins of the Mavericks offense from starting signal caller Tony Flores which seemed to give the Mavericks the spark they needed to get their offensive scheme untracked. The Mavericks engineered a short 33-yard scoring drive mixing their power running game along with their short passing game capping off the drive with a 1-yard keeper by quarterback Ethan Johnson, the point after attempt however was blocked by the LBJ Wolves with Wolves outside linebacker Ricardo Muzquiz recovering and returning the blocked kick 82 yards for a two-point conversion for the Wolves but the Mavericks held on to the slim 6 to 5 lead at the end of the first half.

Midway through the third quarter, the visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks had excellent field possession at the Laredo LBJ Wolves 15-yard line and it took just one play from scrimmage or the Mavericks to tally their next score in this contest as quarterback Ethan Johnson connected with his wide open tight end Isaac Villarreal in the end zone.  Mavericks’ placekicker Ernesto Fuentes split the uprights with the point after to extend the Mavericks lead to 13 to 5.

In the fourth quarter to their credit the Laredo LBJ Wolves utilized their short passing game to compliment their patented power running game to orchestrate a 59-yard scoring drive that culminated with a three-yard blast to pay dirt by workhorse running back Manny Rodriguez. The Wolves two-point conversion run attempt was stuffed by the proud Mavericks defensive unit enabling the Mavericks to hold on to a 13 to 11 lead over the Wolves.

With time winding down in this game the Wolves drove into Mavericks territory where the Mavericks defense buckled down and forced the Wolves to settle for a potential game winning 43 yard field goal attempt but the mighty Mavericks defense spearheaded by hard hitting linebackers Mike De Los Santos, Ernesto Villasenor along with defensive linemen Isaias Gonzalez, Alejandro Ontiveros, Ricardo Morales and the swarming defensive backs German Velasquez, Xavier Cerezo, Domingo Duran and company rose to the challenge and blocked the field goal attempt which was blocked and scooped by defensive back Brandon Wheeler and returned 67 yards into the end zone which proved to be the game clinching touchdown. The point after attempt failed but the Mavericks had now managed to extend their lead to 19 to 11 over the LBJ Wolves.

With just a handful of seconds left in the game the Wolves desperation pass attempt was intercepted by the Mavericks defensive back German Velasquez to secure the well earned and much deserved19 to11 victory over the Laredo LBJ Wolves.
