Fresh off of the big victory over San Benito at the Calallen Tournament, the Lady Mavericks under the guidance of head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr. and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Escontrias and Mayda Herrera hit the road once again on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 top open their respective District 28-5A softball schedule with a 7:00 PM matchup against the Somerset Lady Bulldogs.

The talented Lady Mavericks quickly took the early lead in this game with a lone run in the top of the very first inning with Anissa Salazar reaching on a hit by pitch Mia Uriegas reached safely on a fielder’s choice, Briana Soto connected with an RBI single to drive in Anissa Salazar with the first run of this game.

In the bottom of the fourth the home standing Lady Bulldogs countered with a [pair of runs courtesy of a two run homerun off the bat of their highly touted Division I prospect catcher J. McGuuffin who connected on one of the only three hits allowed by Lady Mavericks’ stellar freshman pitcher Larissa Jacquez in this game.

The proud Lady Mavericks quickly countered with a game tying lone run in the top of the fifth inning with Roxy Moreno leading off the frame with a single and eventually coming around to score on a sacrifice fly by Ana Lopez. In the top o the sixth the Lady Mavericks broke up the two all tie in grand style when right fielder Mia Uriegas blasted a game winning solo homerun to give the Lady Mavericks the thrilling 3 to 2 victory over Somerset and evened their overall season record to3 wins and 3 losses.

Lady Mavericks’ winning pitcher Larissa Jacquez went the distance allowing two runs scattered only three hits and struck out 9 batters to earn the victory.
