Lady Mavs barely edged by

United Lady Longhorns 3 to 2

The C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity softball team mentored by head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr. and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Escontrias and Mayda Herrera hit the road on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 to open their respective 2020 Texas High School softball season with a trip to Laredo, Texas to tangle with the perennially tough Laredo United Lady Longhorns in a 7:00 PM non-district softball diamond matchup at the United ISD Student Activity Center.

The home standing Lady :Longhorns who will be one of the favorites to contend for the District 29-6A title this year broke into the scoring column first with a lone unearned run in the bottom of the second off of young freshman standout Lady Mavericks hurler Larissa Jacquez who did a very respectful job inside the circle going the distance against the usually potent United squad and also led the team in the hitting department going 3 for4 at the plate in her varsity softball debut.

The Lady Longhorns extended their lead with yet another lone run production in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 2 to 0 lead over the Lady Mavericks but the proud Lady Mavericks stormed back to tie the game with a pair of runs in the top half of the sixth inning with Larissa Jacquez connecting with a single, courtesy runner Janell Rodriguez immediately stole second, pinch hitter Ariana Soto belted an RBI single to drive in Janell Rodriguez, with 1 out pinch hitter Briana Soto stroked and RBI double to bring home twin sister Ariana Soto to knot up the score at two runs apiece.

However in the bottom of the sixth the Lady Longhorns capitalized on a pair of Lady Mavericks errors totally a lone unearned run to escape with the had fought 3 to 2 victory over the valiant Lady Mavericks who managed to out hit the Lady Longhorns 13 to 7 in this game.
