The famed Eagle Pass Eagles “Land Sharks” defensive unit, under the direction of Defensive Coordinator Roger Olvas, has year in and year out produced one of the premier defensive units not only in District 29-6A but in the entire UIL Region IV Class 6A as well. Widely known for their notoriety of being a well coached, well disciplined and aggressive squad, that never backs down from any challenge, the Eagles defense closed another banner year in helping to the lead the Eagle Pass Eagles to an overall season record of 7 wins with 5 losses and earned a post season playoff berth. The Eagles stingy, hard hitting and quick pursuing defense was instrumental in the historical bi-district victory over the PSJA Bears holding the explosive Bears scoreless in the entire second half in their stunning 42 unanswered point comeback victory.

Game in and game out. the Eagles defense made their presence known inflicting their bone rattling tackles, coming up with key goal line stances inside the red zone as well as coming up with key game changing turnover plays. The Eagles defense was led by their truly standout outside linebacker Joe Samaniego #28 one of their three unanimous all-district first team defense selections who led the team with a phenomenal 148 total tackles. This mark ranks as one of the highest total marks of total tackles in a single season in the 100 year old history of the Eagle Pass Eagles football program. Inside linebacker Jacob Salinas #45 was second on the team with 112 tackles. Unanimous all-district first team defensive end Charlie Schuessler #44 led the team in tackles for a loss with 26 and also led the team in QB Sacks with 8 followed by MJ McGehee #24 with 6, David Lopez #13 led the team in caused fumbles with 3, Kristian Barcena #2 led the team in interceptions with 6 as well as in blocked passé with 11.
