The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the guidance of head football coach Tom Gonzalez journeyed to Laredo, Teas on Friday, October 18, 2019 to battle against the current district co-leading Laredo United South Panthers in a marquee 7:00 PM gridiron matchup at the Laredo United ISD Student Activity Center. The visiting Eagle Pass Eagles ventured into this game sporting and overall season record of 5-2 and a district mark of 2-1 while the home standing Panthers entered with an overall season mark of 4-3 and a district record of 2-0.

The visiting Eagles ran into a red hot team that features superior speed in the likes of their truly standout out running back Brian Benavides who had a field once again leading all rushers with a total of 242 yards rushing and tallied three rushing touchdowns in this game for the United South Panthers as well as an excellent field general in quarterback Efrain Hernandez.

Equally as fast was the United South quick pursuing and swarming defensive unit that held the Eagles diversified offense to way below their usual average in rushing, passing as well as in total yardage. The home standing United South Panthers opened the scoring with a 9 yard touchdown run by running back Brian Benavides. The point after was good giving the Panthers the early 7 to 0 lead in this game.

The Eagles countered with a 68 yard scoring drive mixing the ground game with their short passing game to matriculate down the field capping off the scoring drive with an 8 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Allan Rodriguez to wide receiver Carlos Santos with 2:37 left in the opening period. Erick Ramirez split the uprights with the point after to knot up the score at 7 all.

But the Panthers quickly regained the lead when Gael Sanchez returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards to the house. The point after was good giving the Panthers a 14 to 7 lead over the Eagles. Eagle Pass responded with a 70 yard scoring drive that culminated with a 19 yard touchdown pass from Allan Rodriguez to Carlos Santos. Erick Ramirez converted the point after to knot up the score at 14 all. After that it was all United South.

The Panthers managed to break the tie for good with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter the first of which was an 11 yard run to pay dirt by running back Brian Benavides and second was a 1 yard quarterback sneak by quarterback Efrain Hernandez. The Panthers placekicker converted both point after attempts to give the Panthers a 28 to 14 lead over the Eagles at the halftime break.

The Panthers continued their scoring assault in the third quarter with Brian Benavides tallying his third rushing touchdown with a 23 yard sprint into the end zone. The point after was good extending the Panthers lead to 35 to 14. The Panthers then struck again quickly with an 81 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Efrain Hernandez to wide receiver Toby Cisneros. The point after gave the Panthers a comfortable 42 to 14 lead.

The Panthers then closed out the scoring in this game with a late third quarter touchdown on an 8 yard run to pay dirt by backup running back Matthew Aguirre. The point after gave the Panthers an insurmountable 49 to 14 lead over the Eagles.

But it was the Eagles “Land Sharks” defense that closed out the scoring in this game as stellar defensive cornerback Kristian Barcena intercepted a Panthers pass attempt and returned it 20 yards into the end zone for a Pick 6 in the fourth quarter. Erick Ramirez tacked on the point after to close out the scoring with this game enabling the Laredo United South Panthers to come away with the 49 to 21 victory over the Eagle Pass Eagles.

The Eagles will regroup and get ready to host the always tough Laredo Alexander Bulldogs in a vital 7:00 PM District 29-6A gridiron encounter on Friday, October 25, 2019 at the Eagle Pass Eagles Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium with major playoff implications riding on the line.
