Eagles lose to

Laredo United 42 to 28

The early marquee matchup in District 29-6A took center stage on Friday, September 27, 2019 when the high flying Eagle Pass Eagles under the direction of head coach Tom Gonzalez hosted the preseason district favorite the pass happy Laredo United Longhorns mentored by head coach David Sanchez in a 7:00 PM district opening gridiron encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium Both teams ventured into this game sporting identical overall season records of 3 wins with only one loss. The home standing Eagles put up a valiant fight but it was not meant to be as the Laredo United Longhorns went home with a hard fought 42 to 28 victory over the Eagles.

The Eagles won the opening coin toss but deferred their option to the second half soothe United Longhorns received the game’s opening kickoff and quickly show their explosive offense with a six play 70 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a fourth down 30 yard touchdown run by tailback Carlos Jaime with 9:47 showing on the first quarter clock. Placekicker Arnulfo Ortega tacked on the point after to give the Longhorns the early 7 to 0 lead in this game.

After an exchange of two punts apiece by both teams the Laredo United Longhorns went back to work mixing their prolific aerial show and running game to manufacture a 59 yard scoring drive that culminated with a 14 yard touchdown pass from Wayo Huerta to wide receiver Ricky Chapa with 6:32 left in the second quarter. Arnulfo Ortega added the point after to extend the Longhorns lead to 14 to 0.

The gallant Eagles countered with a 67 yard scoring drive to get on the board when reserve running back Saul Peralez blasted into the end zone from one yard out with 1:58 left before halftime. Erick Ramirez split the uprights with the point after to narrow the Eagles deficit to 14 to 7.

The Eagles had an excellent opportunity to possibly knot up the score in the waning seconds of the first half but the pass attempt fell in and out of the receiver’s hands just as the receiver was about to cross the end zone line so the usually high scoring Longhorns only took their narrow 14 to 7 lead into the halftime locker room. The entire Eagles “Land Sharks” defense have to be commended as they held their own against the potent Longhorns offense allowing just 54 yards rushing and 72 yards passing in that first half.

In the second half the Eagles well balanced offensive attack came out of their halftime locker room really focused, on fire and firing on all cylinders mixing their short passing game with quarterback Allan Rodriguez spreading the wealth with his receiving corps of Dakota Kypuros, Carlos Santos, Cgc Ritchie and David Lopez along with the ground assault with tailback Isaac Caballero and quarterback Allan Rodriguez sharing the load carrying the ball gaining key yardage to sustain a well executed 15 play 81 yard scoring drive with tailback Isaac Caballero finding pay dirt from one yard out with 6:01 showing on the third quarter clock. Erick Ramirez converted the game tying point after to knot up the score at 14 all.

But the quick striking United Longhorns immediately regained the lead with a two play 67 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 60 yard sprint into the end zone by Longhorns running back Carlos Jaime with 5:07 left in the third quarter. Arnulfo Ortega tacked on the point after to give the Longhorns a 21 to 14 lead over the Eagles.

The Eagles answered right back with an impressive 70 yard scoring drive that culminated with a five yard run by tailback Isaac Caballero with 1:27 left in the third quarter. Erick Ramirez converted the game tying point after to make the score 21 all.

It took the Laredo United Longhorns just one play from scrimmage to regain the lead for good as Wayo Huerta connected with wide receiver Rick Chapa with a 67 yard touchdown pass with 1:06 left in the third quarter. Arnulfo Ortega split the uprights with the point after to give the Longhorns a 28 to21 lead over the Eagles

Early in the fourth quarter the Longhorns orchestrated a 69 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 5 yard touchdown pass from Wayo Huerta to wide receiver Ricky Chapa with 9:07 showing on the fourth quarter clock. Arnulfo Ortega added to point after to pad the Longhorns lead to 35 to 21.

Late in the fourth quarter the Eagles offense mounted a promising drive that saw them take the ball all the way deep into the Red Zone twhere the Eagles ball carrier was hit hard causing him to fumble the ball away with the Longhorns recovering the ball at their own six yard line.

The Laredo United Longhorns then proceeded to mount a time consuming 94 yard scoring drive that culminated with a 9 yard touchdown pass from Wayo Huerta to wide receiver Aric De Los Santos with 1:48 left in the game. Arnulfo Ortega padded the Longhorns lead to 42 to 21.

But the proud Eagles who never give up no matter what answered with a 46 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 44 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Allan Rodriguez to wide receiver Sergio Lopez with 29 seconds left in the game. Erick Ramirez closed out the scoring with the point after as the Laredo United Longhorns took the district opening encounter by the final score of 42 to 28 over the valiant Eagles.

Although the Longhorns earned the victory they know very well that the Eagle Pass Eagles gave them a real hard fought contest. Eagles’ tailback Isaac Caballero led the Eagles in the rushing department with 132 yards on 26 carries with a pair of touchdown runs but Longhorns running back Carlos Jaime finished as the game’s leading rusher with 219 yards rushing on 19 carries with two touchdown runs. The Eagles offense managed tofind success via the ground and through the airway against the veteran Longhorns defense and the Eagles defense as usual were ready for battle and gave it a gallant effort.

The Eagle Pass Eagles will reload their arsenal and travel to Laredo, Texas on Thursday, October 3, 2019 to square off against the Laredo LBJ Wolves in a 7:00PM district gridiron encounter at the Laredo United ISD Student Activity Center.
