Errors prove quite costly

Region IV Class 5A Area Round

The mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity baseball squad under the guidance of head baseball coach Heriberto Roiz and assistant coaches Rene Ramirez, Jesus Gomez, Domingo Lopez and Rolando Salinas traveled to Jourdanton, Texas on Thursday, May 9, 2019 to open their best two out of three series in a 7:00 PM matchup against the Boerne Champion Chargers the District 26-5A and bi-district champion sporting an overall season record of 28-5 while the Mavericks entered this contest with an overall season record of 20 wins with 11 losses and 1 tie in the first game of the best two out of three series for the UIL Region IV Class 5A Area Round Championship. Due to severe lightning in the vicinity near the baseball field Game 1 of this opening two out of three series had to be rescheduled for 1:00 PM on Friday, May 10, 2019 in Jourdanton, Texas.

GAME 1

In the first game of the best of three series, the Mavericks who were the designated visiting team threatened to score early as Jared Roiz drew a two out walk in the top of the first inning, Mario Galvan followed with a single, both runners advanced into scoring position courtesy of a wild pitch but both runners were left stranded as the next batter grounded out to the pitcher to end the threat.

In the bottom of the second the Boerne Champion Chargers tallied a pair of runs on a pair of uncharacteristic Mavericks and a fielder’s choice to take the 2 to 0 lead in this game. He score remained 2 to 0 until the bottom of the fifth when the Chargers took full advantage of another Mavericks error which prolonged the inning and allowed the Chargers to extend their lead with a five run output in that frame to take a 7 to 0 lead over the Mavericks.

The Mavericks threatened to break into the scoring column in the top of the fifth when Frank Ballones stroked a one out single, with two outs Frank Rivas connected with a single to put runners at the corners but once again the Mavericks could not pull the trigger and stranded both runners which enabled the Boerne Champion Chargers to take game 1 of this series by the final score of 7 to 0.

Although he was tagged with the pitching loss Mavericks starting pitcher Jorge Robledo did more than an amicable job on the mound but Lady Luck was not on the Mavericks side in this game.

GAME 2

In the second game of the best of three series the Mavericks took the field on Saturday for an 11:00 AM matchup against the Chargers under a steady drizzle. The Chargers who were the visiting team in this contest erupted with a three run production in the top of the second inning on a walk, three base hits and a Mavericks fielding error. The Chargers then extended their lead with a four run outburst in the top of the fourth on three base hits and a pair of Mavericks errors to take a 7 to 0 lead over the Mavericks. The Chargers then proceeded to tack on a lone insurance run in the top of the seventh.

The Mavericks lone threat to score came in the bottom of the seventh when first baseman Frank Ballones belted a one out double and advanced to third on a grounded but the final batter struck out to end the game as the Boerne Champion Chargers took game 2 by the final score of 8 to 0 over the valiant C.C. Winn Mavericks to advance to the Regional Quarterfinals round where they will face the Medina Valley Panthers who needed a big three run rally in the bottom of the seventh to edge past by the San Antonio Harlandale Indians by the score of 8 to 7 in their Area Round matchup
