The mighty C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks’ varsity softball team under the tutelage of head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr., and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Escontrias, and Fred Paniagua entertained the San Antonio Harlan Lady Hawks on Thursday, April 18, 2019 in a vital 7:00 PM district and regular season finale at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center softball field with a potential playoff berth at stake. This game was also designated as Parents Night with the Lady Eagles honoring their respective parents during pre-game festivities.

Knowing very well what was at stake, the Lady Mavericks came out swing with Nissa Salazar leading off the bottom of the first by slamming a double to start the evening for the Lady Mavericks, Kayla Sifuentes followed with an RBI single to bring home Nissa Salazar with the first run of the game. Ariana Soto who had a huge night at the plate connected with an RBI single to drive in Kayla Sifuentes to give the Lady Mavericks a 2 to 0 lead.

In the bottom of the third the proud Lady Mavericks supported by the famed Maverick Nation extended their lead with another pair of runs with Ariana Soto belting a one out double, Briana Soto followed with an RBI single to bring home twin sister Ariana Soto, with two outs Mia Uriegas drew a walk, Thiana Reyes followed with an RBI single to drive in courtesy runner Sirena Montez to give the Lady Mavericks a 4 to 0 lead over the Lady Hawks.

The visiting Lady Hawks averted a possible shutout by tallying a lone run in the top of the fourth but the Lady Mavericks quickly got that run back in the bottom of the fifth with Mia Uriegas blasting a solo homerun to give the Lady Mavericks a comfortable 5 to 1 lead in this game.

The Lady Mavericks then proceeded to punch their ticket into the post season with yet another pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth pinch hitter Kiana Diaz leading off the frame with a single and promptly stealing second, Nissa Salazar stroked and RBI double to drive in Kiana Diaz, Nissa Salazar showed her speed on the base path by stealing third, with one out Aria Soto who went a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate came through with a solid RBI single to bring home Nissa Salazar to pad the Lady Mavericks lead to 7 to 1.

The Harlan Lady Hawks could only counter with one more harmless run in the top of the seventh but it was not enough as the Pride of Southern Maverick County the mighty Lady Mavericks came away with the well earned 7 to victory over the San Antonio Harlan Lady Hawks behind the pitching of starting and game winning hurler Angie Escamilla who went six complete innings allowing just one run on 7 hits issued only one walk and had 3 strikeouts before relief pitcher Ariana Soto took over the pitching chores in the top of the seventh allowing one run on one hit did not issue any walks and had one strikeout for the victorious Lady Mavericks who received great news after the game as the Floresville Lady Jaguars who were tied for fourth place along with the lady Mavericks lost their game in extra innings at the hands of the Southwest Legacy Lady Titans in extra innings which gave the Lady Mavericks the outright fourth place playoff berth in District 28-5A.

The District 28-5A fourth place representative C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks will be venturing into the post for the 9th time in their 13 year old storied history as well as their 6th consecutive year.

Eagle Pass Sports Central congratulates the 2019 District 28-5A fourth place C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks’ varsity softball team on you convincing 7 to 2 victory over the San Antonio Harlan Lady Hawks and wishes each of you the very best of luck in your bi-district round playoff series against the San Antonio Edison Lady Golden Bears.
