Medina Valley 10 to 6

Mavs move into a tie for 2nd place

The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity baseball team mentored by head coach Heriberto Roiz and assistant coaches Rene Ramirez, Jesus Gomez, Domingo Lopez and Rolando Salinas who are in contention for a potential playoff berth ventured to Castroville, Texas on Monday, April 15, 2019 to take on the Medina Valley Panthers who are currently one of the district leaders in a key 7:00 PM District 28-5A baseball diamond encounter. The home standing Panthers entered this game with a district record of 8-3 while the Mavericks came in with an 8-4 district mark. The visiting mighty Mavericks strapped on their hitting shoes for this game that resulted into a 14 hit barrage enroute to a huge 10 to 6 victory over the Panthers to move the Mavericks into a tie for second place in the district race.

The Mavericks immediately showcase a preview of coming attractions as leadoff batter and starting pitcher Brandon Villasenor belted a leadoff double in the top of the first, Jared Roiz followed with an RBI single to drive in Brandon Villasenor with the first run of the game.

The home standing Panthers countered with a lone game tying run in the home half of the first inning courtesy of a passed ball. The Mavericks quickly broke up the one all tie with a three run production to take the lead for good in this key contest with Jorge Robledo leading off the frame with a single, Frank Ballones laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Robledo over to second, Salvador Lara connected with an RBI double to bring home Jorge Robledo, JP Ramos followed with a single, Brandon Villarreal slapped an RBI single to drive in Salvador Lara and Jared Roiz lifted an RBI fly ball to tally JP Ramos giving the Mavericks a 4 to 2 lead.

In the top of the third the Mavericks hitting and scoring assault continued with a four run out put to extend their lead to 8 to 1 with Mario Galvan leading off the frame with a double, Miguel Solis followed with an RBI single to bring home courtesy runner Orlando Molina, with one out Frank Ballones connected with a single, Salvador Lara reached on an error which enabled Miguel Solis and Frank Ballones to score on the play, Brandon Villarreal followed with an RBI single to drive in Salvador Lara.

The Panthers countered with a lone run in the bottom of the third but the Mavericks got that run back in the top of the fourth with Miguel Solis belting a two out single, Jorge Robledo followed with a solid RBI double to bring home Miguel Solis to give the Mavericks a 9 to 2 lead over the Panthers.

To their credit the Panthers refused to fold and managed to tally a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and a lone run in the bottom of the fifth to narrow their deficit to 9 to 5 but the proud Mavericks got one of those runs back in the top of the sixth with Jorge Romero leading off the frame with a single, Mario Galvan laid down a well placed sacrifice bunt to advance Romero over to second, Jorge Romero later scored on a passed ball to give the Mavericks a 10 to 5 lead.

Medina Valley could only manage to tack on one more run in the bottom of the sixth but Mavericks relief pitcher Jared Roiz shut the door closed in the bottom of the seventh to give the Mavericks the well earned 10 to 6 victory.
