The C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity softball team mentored by head softball coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr., and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Escontrias and Fred Paniagua currently perched in third place in the district race with a mark of 5-4 hosted the Floresville Lady Jaguars currently in seventh place in the district race with a mark of 2-6 in a key 5:00 PM matchup at the Eagle Pass Student Activity Center softball field. Surprisingly for the second district game in a row the Lady Mavericks were once again upset by a lower ranked team.

The visiting Lady Jaguars took full advantage of four hit batsmen, several bases on balls coupled with a few timely hits to build a 7 to 0 lead over the Lady Mavericks going into the fifth inning where the Lady Jaguars managed to tack on one more lone run to take an 8 to 0 lead in this game.

In the bottom of the fifth the home standing Lady Mavericks finally broke into the scoring column with a pair of runs with Ariana Benavidez stroking a one out single, Ariana Soto followed with an RBI double to bring home Ariana Benavidez Briana Soto reached safely on an error as twin sister Ariana Soto scampered over to third on the play, Martha Garcia reached on a fielder’s choice which enabled Ariana Soto to score on the play.

In the bottom of the sixth the Lady Mavericks added a lone run courtesy of second baseman Nissy Salazar’s solo homerun blast. In the bottom of the seventh the Lady Mavericks threatened to score more runs as they managed to load the bases with only one out but unfortunately just could not manage to bring those runners in as the fell by the final score of 8 to 3.

The loss gives the Lady Mavericks a district record of 5-5 tied with Somerset but Somerset holds the head to head tie breaker over the Lady Mavericks who now hold the fourth place slot in the district race.
