Somerset 4 to 3

The playoff contending C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity softball team under the tutelage of head softball coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr., and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Escontrias and Fred Paniagua currently perched in third place in the district race and coming off a huge memorable comeback victory ventured to Somerset, Texas on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 to open their respective second round of District 28-5A softball diamond action with a 7:00 PM district matchup against the Somerset Lady Bulldogs.

The visiting Lady Mavericks entered this contest with revenge on their agenda as the Somerset Lady Bulldogs upset the Lady Mavericks 13 to 10 in the first round of district play back on February 19, 2019. The Lady Mavericks entered this game ready to unleash their power hitting trio of Briana Soto, Ariana Soto and Anissa Salazar as well as the clutch hitting crew of Ana Lopez, Martha Garcia, Kayla Sifuentes, Thiana Reyes, Ariana Benavidez and Mia Uriegas in support of their pitching trio of Angie Escamilla, Ariana Soto and Amy Flores.

The visiting C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks managed to take the early lead in this game with a lone run in the top half of the second inning with Anissa Salazar belting a one out double, Martha Garcia followed with an RBI single to give the Lady Mavericks the early 1 to 0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth the home standing Lady Bulldogs countered with a lone game tying run courtesy of a pair of Lady Mavericks’ errors. The proud Lady Mavericks regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth with Martha Garcia leading off the frame with a walk and stealing second, with two outs reliable Kayla Sifuentes blasted an fence rattling RBI triple to drive in Martha Garcia, Ariana Soto followed with an RBI single to bring home Kayla Sifuentes to give the Lady Mavericks a 3 to 1 lead.

But the lead did not last long as the Lady Bulldogs answered right back in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs of their own to knot up the ballgame at three runs apiece courtesy of a two run homerun off the bat of Somerset shortstop Ashley Vinton. Angie Escamilla took over the pitching chores in the bottom of the sixth from Lady Mavericks’ starting pitcher Ariana Soto who did an amicable job inside the circle with five complete innings in this game.

The game remained tied heading to the bottom of the seventh where the Somerset Lady Bulldogs centerfielder Megan Montes managed connect with a leadoff triple, The Lady Mavericks coaching staff then decided to intentionally walk the next two batters to set up a possible play at the plate to prevent the game winning run from scoring but Lady Luck was not kind on this night as the next batter hit a Texas League single to drive in the game winning run enabling the Somerset Lady Bulldogs to escape with the heartbreaking 4 to 3 victory over a gallant Lady Mavericks squad who despite the loss still remain perched in third place in the district race.
