The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity baseball squad mentored by head baseball coach Heriberto Roiz and assistant coaches Rene Ramirez, Jesus Gomez, Rolando Salinas and Domingo Lopez currently perched in third place in the district race hosted the always tough Southwest Dragons who are currently in second place in the district race on Friday, March 22, 2019 in a key 7:00 PM District 28-5A baseball diamond encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Polo Moncada baseball field.

The visiting Southwest Dragons took the early lead in this game with a lone run in the top half of the first inning courtesy of a hit by pitch and an RBI single. The proud home standing Mavericks supported by the famed Maverick Nation in attendance countered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning with Jorge Romero belting a one out single, the Mavericks then employed a hit and run to perfection with Mario Galvan slapping a single enabling Jorge Romero advancing all the way to third on the play and Galvan taking second on the throw back to the infield, with two outs Miguel Solis reached on an error by the Southwest right fielder which allowed both Brandon Villasenor and Jorge Romero to score on the play to give the Mavericks the 2 to 1 lead in this game.

In the top of the fifth the Dragons managed to tally a game tying run on a walk and an RBI base hit to knot up the score at two all but that proved to be all of the damage the Dragons would mount in this game off of Mavericks starting pitcher Brandon Villasenor who hurled six and two-thirds of solid work on the mound before being relieved by Jorge Robledo who retired all four batters he would face.

With the score tied at two all the game headed to extra innings. The Dragons went down in order in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth the Mavericks got their leadoff batter Brandon Villasenor on base with a ringing single, Villasenor got in scoring position by stealing second, with two outs Mario Galvan was issued a base on balls, Jacob Salinas followed with a fly ballot third that mishandled by the Dragons third baseman which enabled Brandon Villsenor to score the game winning run all the way in from second as jubilation reigned on the Mavericks side of the field as they picked up a huge 3 to 2 victory over the Dragons with Jorge Robledo earning the pitching victory.
