Southwest 8 to 3

Walks and Errors prove costly

The playoff contending C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity softball team under the guidance of head softball coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr. and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Escontrias, Domingo Lopez and Rolando Salinas hosted the potent and perennially powerhouse Southwest Lady Dragons on Friday March 15, 2019 in a 5:00 p.m. District 28-5A softball diamond encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD softball field with the famed Maverick Nation in attendance ready to support their beloved Lady Mavericks.

The visiting Lady Dragons jumped out to the early lead with a five run production in the top half of the first inning on only two base hits but took advantage of three base on balls issued and a pair of Lady Mavericks errors. The Lady Dragons extended their lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7 to 0 lead over the Lady Mavericks.

The proud young Lady Mavericks countered with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth with Thiana Reyes drawing a walk, Ariana Soto followed with an RBI single to drive in Thiana Reyes, Briana Soto connected with a single to put runners on first and second, The Lady Mavericks then attempted a double steal with Ariana Soto coming around to score on a throwing error to third by the Lady Dragons catcher to make the score 7 to 2 in favor of the Lady Dragons.

In the bottom of the fifth the Lady Mavericks could only manage to tack on one more run with Anissa Salazar drawing a one out walk, with two outs Thiana Reyes stroked an RBI double to drive in Anissa Salazar but the Lady Dragons got that run back in the top of the seventh to come away with the 8 to 3 victory over the valiant Lady Mavericks.

The victorious Lady Dragons only produced five base hits in this game but greatly benefitted from four costly Lady Mavericks errors and a whopping total of10 base on balls issued in this game.
