The C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity girls softball team under the guidance of head softball coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr. and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Escontrias and Fred Paniagua, who are currently perched in a four way tie for second place in the district race, ventured to San Antonio, Texas on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 to square-off against the Southwest Legacy Lady Titans who are under the tutelage of former Eagle Pass Lady Eagles and St. Mary’s University Lady Rattlers pitcher/catcher standout Alex Rodriguez in a vital 7:00 PM District 28-5A softball diamond matchup. Surprisingly this game which was breezing along turned out to be quite a nail biting thriller with the final out of this game being a bang-bang play at the plate.

The visiting Lady Mavericks quickly took the lead with a three run output in the top of the first with Ariana Soto reaching on a fielder’s choice, Briana Soto drew a walk, Mia Uriegas also drew a base on balls to load the bases, Kayla Sifuentes was also issued a base on balls allowing courtesy runner Kiana Diaz to trot home with the first run of the game, Thiana Reyez reached on a fielder’s choice to bring home courtesy runner Sirena Montez, Ana Lopez connected with an RBI single to drive in Kayla Sifuentes.

In the bottom of the first the home standing Lady Titans countered with a three run production of their own to knot the score at 3 all courtesy of a bases clearing three RBI double by first baseman Juliana Garza. The Lady Mavericks answered back with a lone run in the top of the second with Martha Garcia being issued a walk and later scoring on an RBO single off the bat of Kayla Sifuentes.

The Lady Mavericks extended their lead with a three run outburst in the top of the third with Ariana Benavidez stroking a one out single, Anissa Salazar drew a walk, Martha Garcia reached on a fielder’s choice with Anissa Salazar being forced out at second on the play and Ariana Benvidez advancing to third on the play, Lady Mavericks starting and eventual game winning hurler Ariana Soto helped her own cause by blasting a three run home run to give the Lady Mavericks a 7 to 3 lead in this game.

In the top of the fourth the Lady Mavericks padded their lead with a pair of runs with Thiana Reyes belting a one out single, with two outs Ariana Benavidez was issued a walk, Anissa Salazar followed with a solid two RBI single to drive in Thiana Reyes and Ariana Benavidez giving the Lady Mavericks a seemingly comfortable 9 to 3 lead.

But after the Lady Mavericks made a pitching change the Southwest Legacy Lady Titans to their credit refused to fold and began to mount a comeback with two runs in the fifth an 2 runs in the sixth to narrow their deficit to 9 to 7.

In the top of the seventh the Lady Mavericks added some much needed insurance with a three run production with Ariana Soto leading off the frame with a ringing double, Briana Soto stepped up to the plate a blasted a two run home run way over the fence, with two outs Thiana Reyes reached on a fielder’s choice, Ana Lopez drew a walk, Kiana Diaz followed with a clutch RBI to tally Thiana Reyes with the 12th and what would eventually prove to be the game’s winning run.

In the bottom of the seventh the Lady Titans made this game quite interesting with a four run production to narrow their deficit to single run and had the bases loaded with only one out and the game tying run perched third and the potential game winning run at second, the next Lady Titans batter lined out to shortstop Thiana Reyes for the second out of the inning and when Thiana Reyes threw over to first to pickoff the runner at first for the final out the ball got past the first baseman but luckily the ball bounced off the first bas coach’s leg and right back into the hands of Amy Flores who threw home to get the runner trying to score from third and after the bang-bang play the umpire signaled that the runner was out for the final out of this nail biter giving the Lady Mavericks the thrilling 12 to 11 victory. This game marked the very first time that the talented powering hitting Soto twins (Ariana and Briana) hit a homerun each in the same game. The Lady Mavericks thus improve their overall season record to 14-4and their district mark to 4-2.

Eagle Pass Sports Central congratulates the mighty C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks on their thrilling 12 to 11 victory over the Southwest Legacy Lady Titans which now sets up a marquee matchup this coming Friday, March 15, 2019 when the Lady Mavericks will entertain the perennially tough and playoff contending Southwest Lady Dragons in a key 5:00 PM District 28-5A softball diamond matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center softball field.
