The mighty Eagle Pass Lady Eagles varsity girls’ softball team headed East on Hwy 90 on Thursday, February 28, 2019 for a trip to Seguin, Texas to compete in the truly high powered 2019 Seguin Lady Matadors Invitational Softball Tournament where they would be facing-off against some truly high caliber softball programs in this three-day Texas High School softball tournament. The Lady Eagles won 4 out of their 6 games at the tournament but did manage to put on quite a power hitting display throughout the tournament to improve their overall season record to 11 wins with 7 losses.

GAME 1

In their first game of the Seguin Tournament, the Lady Eagles were paired up against none other than the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s number 2 ranked team in Class 6A the potent New Braunfels Canyon Lady Cougars whose ace pitcher Aliyah Pritchett handcuffed the usually powerful Lady Eagles lineup to the tune of only one base hit and that came off the bat of Lady Eagles right fielder Alyssa Lara to break up the potential No-Hitter. The Lady Eagles only had two batters get on base Alyssa Lara with her base hit and starting pitcher Kaitlin Galvan who drew a walk.

GAME 2

The second match off pool play had the Lady Eagles tangle with the Denton Ryan Lady Raiders in a 7:40 PM encounter with the Lady Eagles taking the early lead with a huge six run production in the top half of the very first inning with Leslie Martinez leading off the game with a single and promptly stole second, Brooke Diaz who was back in the starting lineup after being out of last week’s tournament with an undisclosed injury belted an RBI double to drive in Leslie Martinez with the first run of the game, with two outs Kaylynne Ruiz reached on an error allowing courtesy runner Emily Rodriguez to score on the play, Lashay Reyes also reached on an error to bring home Kaylynne Ruiz, Alyssa Lara stepped up to the plate and blasted a two run homerun to score Lashay Reyes ahead of her, Iliana Luna followed with a single, Lady Eagles ace pitcher helped her own cause connecting with an RBI double to drive in Iliana Luna to give the Lady Eagles the 6 to 0lead in this game

Denton Ryan countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first but the proud Lady Eagles quickly got one of those runs back with a lone run in the top of the second with Brooke Diaz leading off the frame with a single, with one out Lorelei Morales came through with an RBI single to drive in courtesy runner Emily Rodriguez to extend the Lady Eagles lead to 7 to 2.

The Lady Raiders then proceeded to narrow their deficit to a single run by plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and another pair of runs in the bottom of the third and managed to not up the score with a lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

In the top of the sixth the Lady Eagles broke up the tie with a lone run to take an 8 to 7 lead but in the bottom of the sixth the Denton Ryan Lady Raiders tallied a pair of runs on a walk-off two RBI double to take the 9 to 8 victory over the Lady Eagles who deserved a much better fate but six really costly fielding and throwing errors greatly contributed to the loss.

GAME 3

On Friday the Lady Eagles resumed pool play with a 1:00 PM matchup against the San Antonio Holy Cross Lady Knights. Stiill reeling from the previous night’s heartbreak late inning the loss the mighty Lady Eagles settled the eventual outcome of this contest with a huge 9 run production in the top half of the very first inning as their bats came alive with Leslie Martinez getting the hitting and scoring parade started with a leadoff double and immediately stealing third, Brooke Diaz followed with a solid RBI single to drive in Leslie Martine with the first run of the game, courtesy runner Gaby Escamilla stole second, with one out , Lorelei Morales drew a walk, Kaylynne Ruiz reached on an error to load the bases, Lashay Reyes reached on a fielder’s choice but Gaby Escamilla was forced out at home, Alyssa Lara belted a two RBI double to drive in Lorelei Morales and Kaylynne Ruiz, Paola Daniel connected with an RBI double to bring home Lashay Reyes, Kaitlin Galvan stroked an RBI double to bring home Alyssa Lara, Leslie Martinez belted an RBI single to drive in Paola Daniel, Brooke Diaz came through with an RBI single to tally Kaitlin Galvan, Alex Martinez followed with a two RBI double to drive in Leslie Martinez and courtesy runner Gaby Escamilla to give the Lady Eagles a comfortable 9 to 0 lead over the Lady Knights.

This would to be more than enough lead for Lady Eagles starting and game winning pitcher Alyssa Galvan who hurled three complete innings allowing just one run and scattered four base hits issued just one base on balls to earn the victory. The Lady Eagles tacked on one more insurance run in the top of the third with Leslie Martinez reaching on an error and advancing to second on the play, Leslie then quickly stole third, Brooke Diaz who had a perfect day at the plate going 3 for 3 with 3 RBI’s connected with a single to drive in Leslie Martinez.

GAME 4

Friday’s second game of the day pitted the Lady Eagles against the San Antonio Reagan Lady Rattlers who year in and year out are one of the top teams in the greater San Antonio area in a 4:20 PM matchup with ace hurler Kaitlin Galvan back inside the circle.

The Reagan Lady Rattlers took the early lead with a lone run in the bottom of the first but the mighty Lady Eagles answered back with a four run production in the top half of the third inning with leadoff batter Leslie Martinez getting rally started with a hit by pitch and promptly stealing second, the clutch hitting Brooke Diaz followed with an RBI double to bring home Leslie Martinez with the game tying run, Alex Martinez followed with RBI single to drive in Brooke Diaz with the go ahead run, Alex Martinez then swiped second to get into scoring position, cleanup batter Lorelei Morales came through with an RBI single to bring home Alex Martinez, Lorelei also stole second to get into scoring position, Kaylynne Ruiz connected with an RBI single to drive in Lorelei Morales to give the Lady Eagles a 4 to 1 lead in this game.

The Lady Rattlers could only managed to tack on one more lone run in the bottom of the third but the proud Lady Eagles got that run plus two more in the top half of the fourth to seal the outcome of this game with Brooke Diaz who once again had a perfect day at the plate going 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored with one RBI getting things started with a two out single and immediately stealing second, Alex Martinez followed with an RBI to bring home Brooke Diaz, Lorelei Morales stroked and RBI single to drive in Alex Martinez, Lorelei Morales then stole second Kaylynne Ruiz followed with an RBI single to bring home Lorelei Morales to give the Lady Eagles a 7 to 2 lead over the Lady Rattlers.

Lady Eagles’ standout pitcher Kaitlin Galvan then retired the side in order in the bottom of the fourth to give the Lady Eagles the well earned 7 to 2 victory.

Saturday Morning had the Lady Eagles battling the Devine Lady Warhorses with the Lady Eagles taking the early lead with Brooke Diaz reaching on a one out error in the top of the first, Alex Martinez also reached on an error enabling Brooke Diaz to score on the play, the Lady Eagles extended their lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second with Lashay Reyes drawing a walk and promptly stealing second, Alyssa Lara followed with an RBI double to drive in Lashay Reyes, Cristabel Martinez reached on a fielder’s choice but Alyssa Lara was tagged out between second and third on the play, Cristabel Martinez would later score on Iliana Luna’s RBI ground out to give the Lady Eagles a 3 to 0 lead.

The Lady Warhorse would narrow their deficit to a single run with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second but the proud Lady Eagles answered right back with three runs in the top of the third with Alex Martinez drawing a walk, with one out Kaylynne Ruiz and Lashay Reyes drew back to back walks to load the bases, Alyssa Lara reached on a fielder’s choice with Lashay Reyes forced out at second but Alex Martinez raced home on the play, Cristabel Martinez belted a two RBI double to bring home Kaylynne Ruiz and Alyssa Lara to give the Lady Eagles a 6 to 2 lead.

The Lady Eagles then tacked on three more insurance runs in the top of the fourth with Leslie Martinez leading off the frame reaching on an error and came around to score on an RBI ground out by Brooke Diaz, with two outs Lorelei Morales blasted a triple, Kaylynne Ruiz followed with a two run homerun to give the Lady Eagles a 9 to 2 lead and although Devine came back to score four runs in the bottom of the fourth it was not enough as the Lady Eagles came away with the victory by the final score of 9 to 6 with Kaitlin Galvan earning the pitching victory.

GAME 6 4:20 PM

In the finale of the tournament the Lady Eagles were pitted against the San Antonio Harlandale squad in a 4:30 PM matchup, The Lady Eagles used this game to tune up for their upcoming District 29-6A opener scheduled for this coming Wednesday by putting on a powerful hitting and scoring production to the tune of 23 runs on 26 hits including a total of 5 homeruns, 6 doubles and 15 singles.

The Lady Eagles erupted with a huge 12 run outburst in the top of the first highlighted by Lorelei Morales’ two run home run to settle the eventual outcome of this game. The Lady Eagles ten extended their lead with 7 more runs with their power hitting duo of Brooke Diaz and Alex Martinez blasting back to back homeruns twice in that frame. The Lady Eagles then tacked on 4 more runs in the top of the third to come away with the whopping 23 to 0 victory over San Antonio Harlandale.

Gaby Escamilla, Kaitlin Galvan and Alyssa Galvan shared the pitching duties with each hurler tossing one complete inning of work inside the circle with Gaby Escamilla credited with the pitching victory. A total of four Lady Eagles had a perfect day at the plate in this game with Brooke Diaz going 4 for 4 with 4 runs scored and 6 RBI’s including two three run homeruns, Alex Martinez going for for 4 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI’s including two solo homeruns, teammate Lashay Reyes was also perfect going 3 for 3 with 3 RBI’s and Kaitlin Galvan went 2 for 2 with 2 runs scored and had 1 RBI.
