Mavericks lose to

Floresville Tigers 74 to 60

The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity boys’ basketball squad mentored by head coach Paulo Valero and assistant coaches Julio Cumpian, Patrick Sanchez, and Eric Ramos hosted the Floresville Tigers on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 in a 6:30 PM District 28-5A hoops encounter at the C.C. Winn High School gym.

The C.C. Winn Mavericks, fresh off their first district win hosted the Floresville Tigers in a 28-5A battle on the hardwood. The Floresville Tigers came into Eagle Pass currently in 4th place and were looking for a win to solidify their playoff position.  The Tigers got off to a quick start with a 9-2 first quarter lead. But the young Mavericks were able to catch some early fire with 3 straight 3 pointers by Alex Rodriguez Eduardo Nava & Jairo Maldonado to take a 18-15 lead going into the 2nd quarter.

The Mavericks streaky shooting continued this time led by Moe Gaytan & Ram Corpus who were either slashing inside for lay-ups or moving it around the perimeter finding the open 3. The defense managed to slow down Floresville with intense pressure in the middle to force everything to the outside. The Mavericks took an 8 point lead into the halftime locker room.

Not to be outdone the Floresville Tigers were able to make some quick adjustments and went on a 11-0 run of their own to start the quarter before the Mavericks settled down and tied it with a transition 3. The young Mavericks were able to hit a big shot right before the quarter ended to make it a 4 point game heading into the 4th.

Although the Mavericks continued to battle hard Floresville continued their hot shooting and pulled away late for a 14 point win by the final score of 74 to 60. Jairo Maldonado led all Mavericks scorers with 17 points followed by Alex Rodriguez with14points.

The C.C. Winn Mavericks would like to invite the public to their next home game at 7:00 pm at the SAC on Tuesday January 29th as they take on rival Uvalde.
