Lady Mavericks defeat

The C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity girls’ basketball team under the leadership of new girls head basketball coach Fred Paniagua and assistant coaches J.J. Iracheta, Jr. Ricardo Hoffman and Tonya Rosas hit the road on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 with a trip to San Antonio, Texas to open the second round of District 28-5A hoops action with a 6:30PM matchup against the San Antonio Southwest Lady Dragons.

The visiting Lady Mavericks came out of the pre-game warm-up ritual clicking on both ends of the court with an aggressive offensive scheme and a suffocating defense that forced several key turnovers early on in this contest with the Lady Mavericks getting scoring production from Ashley Cruz and Aislie Salazar to take a 10 to 7 lead at the end of the first period over the home standing Lady Dragons.

In the second quarter the Lady Mavericks continued their offensive assault on the nets getting scoring contributions from Susana Guerra, Ariana Esquivel, Destiny Sukue and Ruby Estrada to take a 22 to 15 lead over the Lady Dragons into their halftime break.

In the second half of this contest the Lady Mavericks once again dominated both ends of court getting key rebounds and steals which led to fast break layups and short range jumpers as the Lady Mavericks outscored the Lady Dragons 27 to 19 in the second half to come away with a well earned 49 to 34 victory to improve the district record to 3-6. Ashley Cruz led the Lady Mavericks torching the nets for a game high 20 points while teammate Aislie Salazar also tallied in double figures with 10 points.

Also contributing to the victory were Arleth Herrera, Stella De Leon, Andrea Aldape and Da’Shawn Nichols who each helped out with timely rebounds, assists and steals.
