Coming off their open week after their sensational and dominating victory over the previous district co-leading San Antonio Harlan Hawks the C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team under the leadership of head football coach Eric Villasenor resumed their District 14-5A Division I gridiron battles on Friday, November 2, 2018 where they hosted the San Antonio Southwest Legacy Titans in a vital 7:30 PM matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.

This game was designated as C.C. Winn High School’s 2018 Homecoming Game with the coronation of the King and Queen and the Royal Court taking place during the halftime festivities. The visiting Southwest Legacy Titans ventured into this contest sporting and overall season record of 0-9 and a district mark of 0-5 while the home standing Mavericks entered this game with an overall season record of 5-3 and a district record of 2-2.

The home standing C.C. Winn Mavericks playing in front of the famed Mavericks Nation as well as a fairly large Alumni Homecoming crowd in attendance did not disappoint their loyal fans who game in and game out show up always early ready to cheer and support their beloved Mavericks as they erupted with a very well balanced offensive game plan scoring a pair of touchdowns with their patented ground attack and three touchdowns via the airway to keep their potential playoff hopes alive with their sound 36 to 7 victory over the Southwest Legacy.

The Mavericks managed to break into the scoring column first after they recovered a muffed punt with a short 32 yard scoring drive capped off with a well thrown 21 yard swing pass from quarterback Ethan Johnston to his shifty running back Marc Cardenas who out ran passed the Titans secondary on his way to pay dirt with 3:23 showing on the first quarter clock. Mavericks’ placekicker Ernesto Fuentes tacked on the point after to give the Mavericks a 7 to 0 lead.

Early in the second quarter the Mavericks extended their lead on their next offensive series with a well orchestrated 68 yard scoring drive that culminated with a 26 yard keeper by Ethan Johnston right through the heart of the Titans’ defense with 10:16 remaining in the second period. Ethan Johnston also tacked on a two-point conversion run to give the Mavericks a 15 to 0 lead.

The visiting Southwest Legacy Titans only damage of the night came as a result of a muffed punt return by the Mavericks return man recovering the loose pigskin at midfield which produced a 50 yard scoring drive capped off with a 16 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Adrian Rangel to wide receiver Raymond Wilcox with 5:59 left before halftime. Titans’ placekicker Xzavier Morales converted the point after to narrow the Titans deficit to 15 to 7.

But the proud Mavericks countered right back with a 38 yard scoring drive with a 13 yard touchdown pass from Ethan Johnston to sure handed wide receiver Jose Blanco with1:24 left in the second quarter. The two-point conversion attempt failed but the Mavericks manage to take a comfortable 21 to 7 lead into their halftime locker room.

During the halftime festivities, the much anticipated crowning of the C.C. Winn High School’s 2018 Homecoming King and Queen and the Royal Court took place. The 2018 Duke and Duchess representing the Thundering Mavericks Band were Bryan Contreras and Candace Estrada. The 2018 Prince and Princess representing Cheer were German Velasquez and Paulette Rios. The point after attempt was no good but the Mavericks had now padded their lead to 27 to7.

Meanwhile the Mavericks formidable hard hitting, stingy fearsome defense continued their relentless pressure on the Titans spearheaded by the likes of Jose Hinojosa, Ricardo Morales, Alejandro Ontiveros, Javier Cerda, Alexis Ontiveros along with their terrific trio of linebackers featuring Miguel De Los Santos Alex Chris Garcia and Patricio Hernandez holding the Titans running game to only 38 yards rushing on 30 carries. The Mavericks defensive secondary of Hector Nunez, German Velasquez, Azael Rodriguez, Domingo Duran and Gilberto Vasquez also contributed with suffocating coverage on the Titans receiving corps as well as with great run support.

The Mavericks offense once again showcased their well balanced running and passing game on the next offensive series mounting a well executed 52 yard scoring drive culminating with a 30 yard touchdown pass from Ethan Johnston to wide receiver Jose Blanco who made a sensational diving catch in the end zone completely stretched out with 3:25 left in the third quarter. The point after attempt but the Mavericks now held an insurmountable 33 to 7 lead over the Titans.

With two minutes left in the third period the Mavericks coaching staff inserted their backups into the game to get them some quality playing experience and they too managed to produce some points with a 21 yard scoring drive capped off with a 27 yard field goal off the right foot of placekicker Ernesto Fuentes to close out the scoring for the night giving the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks the dominating and well earned 36 to 7 victory over the Southwest Legacy Titans to improve their overall season record to 6-3 and their district mark to 3-2 to remain alive for a potential post season playoff berth depending on the outcome of next week’s games. Ethan Johnston finished as the game’s leading rusher with 66 yards on only 8 carries and tallied a pair of rushing touchdowns and also had a very productive game in the passing department completing 9 out of 10 attempts for 124 yards and tossed three touchdown passes in this game. Mavericks’ backfield duo of Fernando Zapata and Marc Cardenas contributed 58 and 49 tough yards rushing respectively to help the cause. Hats off go to the entire Mavericks’ offensive line manned by left tackle, Jaime Rodriguez. left guard Adrian Munoz, center Daniel Ruiz, right guard Miguel Nino and right tackle Juan Guerra that provided excellent blocking in the run game as well as a rock solid pass protection all game long.
