The C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football team mentored by head football coach Eric Villasenor hit the road on Saturday, October 20, 2018 venturing to San Antonio, Texas to tangle with the current district co-leading Harlan Hawks in a 7:00 PM District 14-5A Division I gridiron encounter at Dub Farris Stadium located on 8400 Loop 1604 W. The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks entered this matchup with an overall season record of 4-3 and a district mark of 1-2. The home standing Harlan Hawks came in sporting a season record of 5-1 and a district mark of 2-0.

The visiting mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks pulled off one of their biggest victories in their 13 year history by knocking off the former district co-leading Harlan Hawks who came in ranked 9th in the San Antonio Express-News greater San Antonio area by the final score of 7 to 3 with a truly sensational performance by the entire Mavericks hard hitting and stingy defense who managed to tally the only touchdown of the game with Mavericks standout defensive end Ricardo Morales intercepting a Harlan Hawks pass attempt and sprinted 57 yards to pay dirt.

This game would prove to be not one for the faint of heart as it turned out to be quite a defensive battle as both teams traded a pair of punts at the start of this contest. On the Harlan Hawks third offensive series of the game the Hawks drove down to the Mavericks 42 yard line where Hawks quarterback Kannon Williams dropped back to pass out into the flat but Mavericks standout defensive end Ricardo Morales intercepted the pass at the Mavericks 45 yard line and sprinted 57 yards untouched into the end zone with1:39 remaining in the first quarter. Mavericks’ placekicker Ernesto Fuentes tacked on the point after conversion to give the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks the early 7 to 0 lead over the stunned heavily favorite Harlan Hawks.

Inspired by teammate Ricardo Morales’ pick six the entire Mavericks defensive unit truly played their hearts out the rest of the game rising to the occasion to force the Hawks to punt the ball over on seven out of their 12 offensive possessions recorded a pair of interceptions and forced the Hawks to turn the ball over on downs twice and the only damage the Hawks would muster in the entire game was a 38 yard field goal by placekicker Alejandro Garcia with 56 second left before halftime. The Mavericks stingy and aggressive defense allowed only a mind boggling total of six yards rushing on 23 carries in this game

The second half of this contest was completely dominated by the famed hard hitting quick pursuing Mavericks defensive front line featuring the relentless pressure from the likes of Alexis Ontiveros, Alejandro Ontiveros, Ricardo Morales and Jose Hinojosa as well as their terrific trio of linebackers Miguel De Los Santos. Alex Chris Garcia and Patricio Hernandez who spent more time in the Hawks backfield than the Hawks running backs inflicting punishing hits on the ball carriers. The Mavericks defensive secondary of Azael Rodriguez, Gilberto Vasquez, Hector Nunez and German Velasquez were severely tested in this game but rose up to the challenge had all of the Hawks receivers well covered all game long and came up with some great defensive plays that greatly contributed to the victory

The Mavericks patented offensive running game got untracked in the second half with hardnosed tailback Fernando Zapata swift and shifty running back Patricio Hernandez and quarterback Ethan Johnston taking turns in toting the pigskin picking up key first downs and burning crucial time off the clock with the entire Mavericks offensive line deserving due credit for their fabulous job in the trenches providing several key blocks to spring their back field loose into the Hawks secondary for key yardage..

But it was the Mavericks defense who put the exclamation point on their huge victory when Mavericks defensive back Hector Nunez put a vicious hit on the Hawks wide receiver simultaneously as the ball arrived causing the ballot ricochet off the receiver’s hand and fellow Mavericks defensive back German Velasquez made a sensational diving shoe string interception at the Mavericks 13 yard line thus turning the ball over to the Mavericks offense who erupted with 140 yards rushing in the second half of this game. Mavericks running back Fernando Zapata and quarterback Ethan Johnson gained some tough yards on their last offensive series of the night picking up a critical first down which enabled the Mavericks to run out the last seconds off the clock to come away with the hard fought but well earned 7 to 3 victory over the previously undefeated district co-leading Harlan Hawks much to the delight of the famed Mavericks Nation in attendance. Fernando Zapata would finish as the game’s leading rusher with 91 yards on 18 carries followed by teammate Ethan Johnston who gained 60 yards on 14 carries. Eagle Pass Sports Central highly commends the outstanding effort by the C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football team as well as their entire coaching staff in this huge victory over the truly stunned Harlan Hawks thus keeping their potential playoff hopes alive and well. Way to Go Mavericks!

The Mavericks have an open date scheduled for next Friday but will return to their district gridiron battles on Friday, November 2, 2018 to host the Southwest Legacy Titans in a 7:30 PM District 14-5A Division I gridiron encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. This game is designated as the 2018 C.C, Winn High School Homecoming Game.
