Lady Mavericks trample over

San Antonio McCollum 14 to 4

Briana Soto blasts 3-run Homerun

The mighty C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity girls’ softball team mentored by head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr. and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Benavidez and Roly Salinas continued their quest to secure a post season playoff berth for their fifth consecutive season and eighth overall in their 12 year history of the program on Friday, April 13, 2018 with a road trip to the Alamo City of San Antonio, Texas to tangle with the San Antonio McCollum Cowgirls in a 7:00 PM District 29-5A softball diamond encounter. The mighty Lady Mavericks supported by the famed Mavericks Nation in attendance clinched a post season playoff berth with a convincing 14 to 4 victory over San Antonio McCollum.

 

The visiting Lady Mavericks managed to dent the scoreboard first with a lone run in the top half of the very first inning with leadoff batter Thiana Reyes reaching base on an error, Kayla Sifuentes laid down a well placed sacrifice bunt to advance Thiana Reyes into scoring position, with two outs red hot hitting Daniela Rodriguez continued her dominance at the plate with a solid RBI single to drive in Thiana Reyes with the first run of the game.

In the top of the second the Lady Mavericks extended their lead with a four run production with Martha Garcia reaching on a two out fielding error, Anissa Salazar drew a walk, Kiana Diaz who would go on to have a very productive night at the plate came through with an RBI single to bring home Martha Garcia, Anissa Salazar would later score on a wild pitch, Thiana Reyes belted an RBI single to deliver Kiana Diaz home, Thiana Reyes would eventually come around to score courtesy of a passed ball to give the Lady Mavericks a 5 to 0 lead over McCollum.

To their credit the home standing McCollum squad fought back with a four run output in the bottom of the third to narrow their deficit to a single run on four base hits and a pair of fielder’s choices. The Lady Mavericks got those four runs back in the top half of the fifth inning with Ariana Soto leading off the frame with a walk, Daniela Rodriguez connected with a single, Jasmin Ballones sacrificed both runners to second and third with a sacrifice, hard hitting Briana Soto stepped up to the plate and launched a booming three run homerun way over the left field fence much to the delight of the entire Mavericks Nation, Martha Garcia followed with a walk, with two outs Kiana Diaz stroked a ringing RBI double to bring home Martha Garcia to give the Lady Mavericks a 9 to 4 lead in this game.

In the top of the sixth inning the C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks sealed the outcome of this game with a huge five run uprising with Ariana Soto once again leading off the frame with a base on balls, Daniela Rodriguez blasted a booming fence rattling RBI triple to bring home Ariana Soto, Jasmin Ballones followed with an RBI triple of her own to score Daniela Rodriguez, Briana Soto lifted a sacrifice fly to deep left field to bring home Jasmin Ballones, Martha Garcia and Anissa Salazar drew back to back walks, Kiana Diaz provided the exclamation point on this contest by stroking a two RBI single to bring home Martha Garcia and Anissa Salazar to give the Lady Mavericks a comfortable 14 to 4 lead over McCollum.

In the bottom of the sixth Lady Mavericks starting and game winning hurler shut the door closed on McCollum to bring an early conclusion to this game via the 10-run rule with the Lady Mavericks coming home with the convincing 14 to 4 victory over McCollum. The Lady Mavericks thus improve their district record to 5-3 and remain in sole possession of third place in the district race and improve their overall season record to 21-10 and earn a berth in the upcoming post season for the eighth time in school history including their fifth consecutive season in a row.

Eagle Pass Sports Central congratulates the mighty C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks on their well earned victory over McCollum and wish you the very best of luck in the upcoming post season playoffs but the Lady Mavericks still have two games remaining on their 2018 schedule the first of which is scheduled for this coming Tuesday, April 17, 2018 when they make their final road trip of the regular and district season to San Antonio, Texas to battle against the Southside Lady Cardinals in a 7:00 PM matchup. The Lady Mavericks will then conclude their regular and district schedule on Friday, April 20. 2018 when they host the current district co-leading San Antonio Harlandale squad in a 7:00 PM encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center softball field in a game that has been designated as Parent’s night where the Lady Mavericks will pay tribute to their respective parents.
