Lady Mavericks dominate

Southside 10 to 3

The C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity girls’ softball team under the guidance of head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr., and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Benavidez and Roly Salinas currently perched in third place in the district race with a district record of 2-1 entertained the winless Southside Lady Cardinals sporting a district mark of 0-3 on Monday, March 26, 2018 in a 7:00 PM District 29-5A softball diamond matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center.

After two scoreless innings of play, the visiting Southside Lady Cardinals took the lead in this game by plating three runs in the top half of the third inning courtesy of 4 base hits a walk and a fielder’s choice and could have very well tacked on another run but Lady Mavericks catcher Briana Soto showcased her Golden arm by throwing out a runner at third but the Lady Cardinals managed to take a 3 to 0 lead over the Lady Mavericks.

The lead did not last long as the proud Lady Mavericks erased their deficit with a six run production in the home half of the third and never looked back. Thiana Reyes led off the frame with a hit by pitch, Martha Garcia singled to right and both runners advanced one base on a error, Daniela Rodriguez reached on an error to drive in both Thiana Reyes and Martha Garcia, Ariana Soto followed with a one hop RBI double into the left field gap to bring home Daniela Rodriguez, with one out Jasmin Ballones came through with an RBI single to tally Ariana Soto with two outs Kayla Sifuentes connected with and RBI single to bring home Jasmin Ballones, Anissa Salazar belted and RBI double to tally Kayla Sifuentes to give the Lady Mavericks a 6 to 3 lead over the Lady Cardinals.

That proved to be more than enough lead for relief hurler Angie Escamilla who took over the pitching chores from starting pitcher Amy Flores in the top of the fourth and was simply dominant inside the circle. The home standing Lady Mavericks supported by the famed Mavericks Nation tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth with Martha Garcia leading off the frame with a single, Daniela Rodriguez connected with a fence rattling RBI triple to bring home Martha Garcia, with one out Briana Soto grounded out to short enabling Daniela Rodriguez to come home on the play to give the Mavericks an 8 to 3 lead over the Lady Cardinals.

; The mighty Lady Mavericks closed out the scoring for the night with another pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth with pinch hitter Kaytilyn Amaya stroking a leadoff double, with two outs Ariana Soto blasted and RBI double to drive in Kaytilyn Amaya, Brian Soto followed with a ringing RBI double to bring home twin sister Ariana Soto to give the Lady Mavericks a comfortable 10 to3 lead in this game.

In the top of the seventh Lady Mavericks pitcher closed the door on this game to earn the pitching victory with four solid complete innings of work allowing no runs and scattering four base hits enabling the Lady Mavericks to take the well earned 10 to 3 victory and thus move into a tie with Uvalde for second place I the district race both now sporting and identical 3-1 district record.
