The highly touted Eagle Pass Lady Eagles’ varsity girls’ softball team ventured to the Alamo City of San Antonio, Texas on Thursday, February 22, 2018 to compete in the highly competitive three day San Antonio Northeast ISD Softball Invitational Tournament where unfortunately Mother Nature shortened the three day tourney into a one day only event due to rain with all games scheduled for Friday and Saturday were washed away. The Lady Eagles did however mange to get two games in on Thursday dropping a close game to Boerne Champion by the score of 4 to3 but rebounded in the second game with a power hitting exhibition to defeat the San Antonio Antonian Lady Apaches by the final score of 15 to 3.

Game 1 vs. BOERNE CHAMPION

In their first game of the tournament the Lady Eagles hooked up in a low scoring match-up with Boerne Champion where hits were at a premium for the usually potent Lady Eagles lineup. The Lady Eagles took the early lead in this game with a lone run in the top of the second inning with Alex Martinez tallying the run for the Lady Eagles. Boerne Champion countered with a game tying lone run in the bottom of the fourth to knot up the score at one run apiece.

In the top of the fifth the Lady Eagles regained the lead with a pair of runs in that frame with Janessa Garza and Alex Martinez coming around to score to give the Lady Eagles a 3 to1 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth. Lady Luck was not kind in the bottom of the fifth for the Lady Eagles as Boerne Champion came back with a three run output to snatch the victory from the jaws of defeat to take the victory by the final score of 4 to 3 over the Lady Eagles who were held to just two hits in this game one by Kayla Ochoa and one by Janessa Garza.

Game 2 vs. S.A. ANTONIAN

In their second game of the tournament the Lady Eagles strapped on their hitting shoes and brought out their potent bats to put on a scoring and hitting exhibition utilizing the long ball early and late. In the home half of the very first inning the Lady Eagles quickly set the tone as standout catcher Brooke Diaz continued her torrid hitting attack at the plate by blasting a two run homerun to tally Leslie Martinez who led off the frame with a single ahead of Brooke Diaz’s blast. Lorelei Morales followed with a one out double, Alexandra Martinez came through with a clutch two out RBI double to drive in Lorelei Morales.

The San Antonio Antonian Lady Apaches countered with a three run output in the top of the second to knot up the score at three runs apiece. But the proud and talented Lady Eagles answered right back in the bottom of the second with a two out four run production to retake the lead for good in this game. Leslie Martinez connected with her second single of the game, power hitting and big RBI producing catcher Brooke Diaz launched her second two run homerun into orbit, Heather Ruiz singled and cleanup batter Lorelei Morales drew a walk, Janessa Garza singled to drive in Heather Ruiz and Alexandra Martinez connected with an RBI to bring home Lorelei Morales to give the Lady Eagles a 7 to 3 lead.

The lead was more than enough for standout Lady Eagles starting and game winning hurler Kaitlin Galvan who only allowed three harmless runs in this game to earn the pitching victory. For good measure the Lady Eagles erupted with a huge eight run production in the home half of the third inning highlighted by Janessa Garza’s titanic three run homerun to come away with the decisive 15 to 3 victory to improve their overall season record to 6-2. The rest of the tournament action was washed away by Mother Nature however.
